As we are in a season of remembrance and renewal, many traditions around the world use plant smoke to honor ancestors, mark transitions, and clear space for the quieter months ahead 🕯️
In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the time between harvest and winter. It aligns with Samhain, Dia de los Mu***os, and All Soul's Day, celebrated just a few days ago, when many people choose to light candles or burn aromatic plants to honor the ancestors that came before them.
🌀 Across the world, plants assist ritual expressions of prayer, gratitude, and connection. Understanding the lands, peoples, and histories of these sacred smoke practices helps us learn with a lens of respect, especially since some of these plants carry sustainability concerns due to overharvest outside of traditional contexts.
Have you ever explored your own ancestral lineage and the plants native to your region? Learning about the traditional use of plants can build a bridge between generations as we connect to our roots.
As you explore, consider: which plants belong to my heritage? Who has traditionally used them, and is it being harvested in a way that supports the community and environment? And, most personally, how can plants help us to not just honor and remember but to care for ourselves as we experience loss and grief? 🍃🤲
This same spirit of reverence and understanding infuses tomorrow's Masterclass in The Herbarium, where curandera and Lead Herbalist Educator Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz will share her ancestral ways to work with plants for emotional and spiritual support through grief, including the burning of copal and pine resins. ✨🕯️
