Today, October 15th, is Infant Loss Awareness Day. It’s a day that holds a unique, heartbreaking significance for so many parents, families, and communities.

It’s a day for us to acknowledge that profound grief and for those walking this road, the silence can be deafening, & the emptiness impossible to measure.

In Arkansas, the urgency of this day resonates even more deeply. Our state's battle with maternal and infant health turns awareness into an urgent call for change, because the challenges here mean our families are facing this unbearable sorrow at a tragically higher rate than much of the nation.

Consider this for a moment: Arkansas consistently holds one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country, currently ranking as high as the 3rd worst in the nation. This isn't just a number; it means that for every 1,000 babies born here, too many families are left with empty arms.

Why is this happening? On a governmental and systemic level, the answer often comes down to access. We know that 37of our 75 counties are classified as maternity care deserts, completely lacking crucial obstetric care. Think about the parent in a rural county who has to travel hours just for a check-up. When adequate prenatal care is inaccessible and when a system is structurally flawed, it leads to a higher rate of complications like preterm birth and low birth weight, the leading clinical causes of infant death.

At Arkansas Doulas, We stand with the mothers, fathers, and families who carry this silent grief every single day. We acknowledge their love and enduring strength.

Let’s use this awareness to open conversations, to demand equity, and to advocate for the resources and support that can help prevent future losses and gently hold those who are grieving.
If you are walking this path, know you are not alone. Your baby existed, your love is eternal, and your grief is valid.
💐Our collective hope must become our commitment to action.

👉 NEWBORN SLEEP TIPS 👈

Remember:
✅ Newborns cannot regulate their circadian rhythm until sometime between 3 and 4 months of age. They are born with some level of melatonin in their body (from the mother) but it eventually fades.

✅ Newborns, despite gestating for 9 months, are extremely under-developed. Transitioning from womb to nursery is difficult!

Here are some tips to help with newborn sleep:

➡️ Treat your babies first 12 weeks of life as their "fourth trimester"! This means bringing the environment of the womb into your home.

➡️ Dark rooms, sound machines, and tight swaddles promote sleep for newborns and provide a sense of comfort and security.

➡️ Ensuring your baby has a full belly helps ensure proper weight gain, good sleep, and peace of mind. Focus on full feeds versus "snacking" throughout the day.

➡️ Feed baby upon waking, instead of feeding to sleep. A lot of newborns will feed to sleep and this eventually turns into a sleep crutch, which we want to avoid if possible. Changing your baby's diaper and/or clothing in the middle of a feed might help keep them awake to complete a full feed.

➡️ Keep your wake windows short! Newborns can't tolerate being awake for longer than 45-60 minutes and will easily become inconsolable. You will want to count feeds in that wake window too, so set a timer on your phone or microwave when baby wakes if you need help tracking your windows!

➡️ As much as we want to, you can't put a newborn on a schedule. Instead, focus on an "eat / wake / sleep" routine so that you can become better attuned to your baby's cries and needs.

➡️ Outside activity and exposure to daylight during day hours helps the circadian rhythm development. On the flip side, avoiding exposure to light at nighttime and keeping things calm and dark helps set the tone for a good night of sleep.

If you are struggling to get your newborn to sleep, we hear you and we want to support you during this transition. We have a highly trained team of doulas and newborn care specialists to help you get the rest you deserve. We also offer remote sleep consulting by phone. Let us be your guide to all things newborn!

Reposted from 5 Things Your Doula Does That You May Not Know About

1. They research EVERYTHING 👩🏾‍💻 Especially if you develop ____(fill in the blank)
2. They worry about you. Whether it's it's physical or mental, if you are having a hard time, they look for ways to make it better.
3. They consult with other doulas and health care workers to find the best support for you.
4. Sometimes, they fight the urge to call you so you can rest and recover. (We are just that excited for you and want to make sure you are ok🤗)
5. Your accomplishments and progress gives us great joy🥰

**BONUS** If your doula tells you to reach out if you need anything, even after the contract is over, they really mean it.

The health care system often neglects women’s postpartum concerns, from physical pain to psychological anguish. Many women assume this is what you get when you have a baby. But experts say it doesn’t have to be this way.
