From a Farmington Medical Laboratory Manager regarding testing for the COVID 19 virus: "I have been asked several times why lines are long for testing. Currently confirmation of a positive test for Covid is done at CDC. The state health dept perform a screen so that is where you hear/read presumptive positive. The state has to send to CDC for confirmation. Physician office and hospitals have to initially test for strep/flu/RSV which are common respiratory illnesses. These tests range from 5-10 min to perform. If they are negative, then a call has to be placed with the state to get an okay to send a specimen for Covid, there is a criteria that one has to meet to get the okay. This can take several hours due to high volume of calls. Specimen has to be collected from back of throat and a nasopharyngeal that are put in two viral collection kits. Currently there is limited number of kits that hospitals/offices can get. During collection, staff collecting have to wear a N95 mask which is also limited. So be patient, expect wait time, and if you don't need to be out, stay home. Remember facilities are having to deal with daily changes. Currently there is no rapid test like we have for streps, flu. Oh and it would be preferred if you don't enter a building. Most facilities do not have well ventilated/zero pressure rooms so hence the outside drive through testing."
