Centra Southside Community Hospital

Centra Southside Community Hospital Come Visit us at our Website:
http://sch.centrahealth.com Construction and operating grants were made possible by the Commonwealth Fund of New York.

It all started in 1925, when a group of citizens set out to obtain a hospital that would serve the rich and the poor as well as measure up to "big city" standards of medicine. Southside Community Hospital was originally a foundation experiment to determine if proper health care could be provided in a rural setting. In July 1926, the Farmville Manufacturing Company was awarded the construction contract and by November 1927 Southside Community Hospital had opened its doors to patients. The original 40-bed hospital cost $180,000 to build and equip. That expenditure, minimal by today's standards, has proven to be a wise investment. SCH has been the healthcare center of Southside Virginia since opening its doors November 9, 1927. Since then, it has operated on a non-profit basis with the goal of helping to heal the ill and injured. The hospital now serves the residents of Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward Counties. Our Vision

An Important Update for Our Farmville Community

Centra has made the very difficult decision to discontinue OB/GYN services in Farmville effective December 19, 2025. This includes the Labor & Delivery Unit and OB/GYN Surgical Services at Centra Southside Community Hospital and outpatient care at CMG Southside Women’s Center.

We recognize how deeply this decision will affect the Farmville community and understand the sadness it brings to families who have welcomed their babies into the world at Centra Southside Community Hospital.

Over the past several years, the number of deliveries at CSCH has declined to fewer than 275 annually. This low volume has made it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain physicians and ensure the 24/7 on-call coverage needed to provide the high-quality, safe OB/GYN care our patients deserve. At the same time Centra, like other rural healthcare providers, must adapt to significant financial and operational challenges, including recently enacted reductions in federal healthcare funding.

Centra remains deeply committed to the women and families of Southside Virginia. We will continue our longstanding partnership with Central Virginia Health Services (Federally Qualified Health Center) in Farmville along with other community partners to facilitate access to outpatient women’s services and to help patients transition care to our Lynchburg facilities, or another site that best meets their needs.

All OB/GYN services in Farmville will continue through December 19, 2025. Our caregivers are here to support you—and are currently reaching out to patients to help coordinate care.

Thank you for your understanding and trust as navigate transition together.
