Virginia Food Works

Virginia Food Works Virginia Food Works is a non-profit organization that guides food producers in taking their product from recipe to retail.

We offer co-packing services, specializing in the creation of value-added foods from locally grown ingredients. After researching the existence of food processing facilities in Virginia, we were surprised to find that there is not a place where fresh, local food can be preserved. In this environment of incredible local food demand, combined with the need for farmers to increase produce sales and retain or expand their farms, we see a small-scale food processing facility as the missing link in a truly local food system. Ken Meter, a food systems analyst of the Crossroads Research Center, has studied Virginia’s food system and summarized that 85 to 90% of the food Virginians eat originates or is produced somewhere else. With our favorable climate and ability to grow diverse crops, combined with a strong demand for purchasing local foods, Virginia Food Works will “connect the dots” in our food system. We are starting small this first year by providing canning services. The eventual goal of the facility is to be able to provide a Virginia source for everyday grocery staples. Virginia Food Works works to help farmers and small growers maximize the potential of their land; build small food businesses; help social service organizations keep healthy food on food pantry shelves throughout the year; and provide our residents, schools, restaurants and institutions with access to safely-processed, nutritious local foods throughout the year. Virginia Food Works is a full-service food processing facility located in Prince Edward County, Virginia. The venture is a public/private partnership where the processing facility and equipment are owned and maintained by the government of Prince Edward County. The facility is uniquely located in the “heartland” of Virginia, allowing easy access for farmers and food entrepreneurs across the state of Virginia.

Honored to be a part of this story!

Public canneries once gave gardeners, cooks and farmers easy ways to preserve produce. Few remain now, but canning still has a role to play.

We are immensely proud of VFW's Founder and Board Member Allie Hill for her recognition as a 2021 Charlottesville Hometown Hero! Allie puts her whole heart into her work, and we are so lucky to have her guidance and support as the organization she started continues to grow and thrive. Congratulations, Allie!

We had a great time making garlic scape relish with Shalom Farms yesterday! We developed the recipe with them after they harvested a bounty of scapes last season, and other farmers can use the recipe to make relish with us, too!
