Upper Iowa University: A Legacy of Innovation and Leadership in Distance Counselor Education
Did you know that Upper Iowa University (UIU) has a long-standing legacy of innovation in higher education that has helped shape how students learn across the nation? Founded in 1857 in Fayette, Iowa, UIU has consistently demonstrated a commitment to expanding access to high-quality education for learners from all walks of life.
In 1973, Upper Iowa University launched its external degree program, offering independent study and distance learning formats at a time when such approaches were virtually unheard of in higher education. This groundbreaking initiative positioned UIU as one of the earliest pioneers of flexible, student-centered education in the United States, decades before online learning became mainstream.
Building on this foundation, UIU introduced online programs in 1999, further extending educational access to students around the globe. Over the years, the University has continued to refine and expand its distance education model, earning national recognition for innovation, accessibility, and academic excellence.
Today, UIU’s distance education legacy continues through programs such as the Master’s in Counseling, where innovation is intentionally integrated into the preparation of future counseling professionals. Through a synchronous learning environment, counselors-in-training engage in real-time instruction, skills practice, and meaningful interaction with faculty and peers. This approach supports both foundational and advanced technology competence, training students in the effective use of digital tools for counselor education and practice. Continuous mentorship, live supervision, and interactive learning closely mirror the relational and evolving nature of contemporary counseling!
By blending UIU’s pioneering spirit in distance education with intentional, synchronous training, our Counseling Program exemplifies how innovation and human connection can coexist, preparing students not only to succeed academically, but to grow into ethical, competent, and well-supported counseling professionals!
