Tucking the Farm In for Winter ๐ŸŒพ

This month, students are learning that farming doesnโ€™t stop when the weather turns cold! Through the book Sleep Tight Farm, they discovered how farmers work hard all year long โ€” especially right now โ€” to prepare for winter. โ„๏ธ

Students talked about how farm families harvest the last of their crops, stack hay, store feed, and care for animals and equipment before the snow flies. Each student even decorated their own pillowcase to take home as a reminder that even while we sleep, farmers are still working to provide for all of us. ๐Ÿ’š

Lessons like this help students see the heart, dedication, and year-round effort that goes into agriculture โ€” and why every season on the farm matters. ๐Ÿšœ๐ŸŒพ

๐ŸŒฝ Learning from the Corn Field to the Classroom!

This week, upper elementary students in Fayette County became plant experts as they identified and took apart a corn plant to explore its many parts! Each group studied one piece โ€” roots, silk, leaves, tassel, stalk, husk, or ear โ€” and created a poster to teach their classmates about the important job it plays in helping corn grow. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ“š

By piecing their knowledge together, students discovered how every part works as a team and why corn is such an essential crop for Iowa farmers. ๐Ÿšœ๐Ÿ’›

Hands-on learning like this helps our students connect whatโ€™s growing in the classroom to whatโ€™s growing in the fields all around them!

๐ŸŒพ Happy National Farmers Day! ๐ŸŒพ

Today we pause to honor the backbone of rural America โ€” our farmers.

From sunrise to sunset, they nourish our communities, steward the land, and drive our local economy. Letโ€™s take a moment today to thank a farmer, support local agriculture, and recognize that every meal we enjoy stems from their dedication.

Growing Curiosity Across Fayette County! โœจ๐ŸŒฑ

This month, elementary students all over Fayette County are turning into little scientists! Theyโ€™re learning how seeds sprout and grow by creating their own seed germination necklaces โ€” tiny greenhouses they can wear. ๐Ÿ’งโ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ

Each student will take their seeds home to hang up in their โ€œhouseโ€ and watch the magic of germination unfold over the next several days. Itโ€™s hands-on learning, a little bit of science, and a whole lot of fun!

Weโ€™re so excited to see these young learners explore agriculture and plant science throughout October! ๐ŸŒŸ

Farm Bureau members from across the state departed their Iowa farms for Washington, D.C., Sept. 8-11, and met with their elected officials and agency representatives. Members shared personal stories and examples of how important ag issues impact their farms, including the critical need for the farm bill. Other important topics and issues raised by members included protecting interstate commerce, combating low crop prices and growing opportunities for trade.
Twenty-eight members from the graduating class of Iowa Farm Bureau Federationโ€™s (IFBF) Ag Leaders Institute, which trains members on how to represent their farms, their county Farm Bureaus and the ag industry, joined the trip. Included in the trip, pictured left to right, were Josh Jeske of Eldora; Chris Lueder of Fayette; Brian Frye of Williams and Ben Zitelman of Manchester.
The graduating Ag Leaders class visited with Iowa Sens. Charles Grassley and Joni Ernst, as well as the offices of Reps. Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Zach Nunn and Randy Feenstra.
Members stressed the urgency of passing an updated farm bill and shared how historically low crop prices create many challenges for farmers and threaten family farms and ag-related businesses. The farmer delegation urged lawmakers to make critical updates to the farm safety net which are needed to help farmers manage risk and provide certainty for long-term planning.
The Washington, D.C. trip serves as the culmination of the year-long Ag Leaders Institute, a program designed for Farm Bureau members of all ages who care about the future of agriculture and want to make a positive impact; have the potential for providing exceptional leadership in their community, county and state; and are interested in advancing in leadership positions within Farm Bureau and agriculture. Participants learn about the latest information and insights on issues important to agriculture, practice developing the leadership skills needed to deal with issues critical to agriculture and leading change and develop a statewide network of leaders in Farm Bureau and agriculture who are committed to the future of rural Iowa. Graduates will be recognized at the Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting, Dec. 9-10 in Des Moines.
