Every year the NWA Gazette holds voting for Best of the Best in Northwest Arkansas. This year I was surprised to be nominated for four categories: Best Hearing Center, Best Audiologist, Best Medical Facility and Best Customer Care.

Being nominated is great but I would like to win! To do this I need everyone to vote everyday for me and Sound Solutions.

The internet is out in parts of Fayetteville. My office is affected. Without internet we can not schedule, call, or program. Therefore I am letting the staff go home for an early weekend.

Veterans Helping Veterans:

I received a call today from a very distraught lady. She was really at her end with her husbands hearing aids. She explained that she had her very tech savy son try, the geek squad, everyone. Her last hope was calling Signia Hearing to find a someone local who could her her husband. He is a WW2 veteran who received his hearing aids in December. They have tried and tried to connect them to his TV unit since then. She called me and I was able to go out to their place and visit with them. Got everything set up so that she and their caregivers can have a bit of peace while her husband was happy to be able to hear the TV finally!

Its the small things that I am able to do for people. Its not much but to them it meant the world. That's why I am in this profession. I can make a difference one person at a time!

Yesterday I extended my office hours for an old patient of mine from a few years ago. I had not seen her in years due to her moving to California. Her friend brought her to my office (she's elderly and has no car) and then had to leave.
This patients main complaint was her hearing aids were not working. She brought the hearing aids that I fit her with 4 years ago along with an exact set she bought in California. I was confused why she bought another set in California actually and she said that one of hers quit and they could not fix it, When they ordered a replacement it would not match up either. OK at this point I am REALLY confused. #1 why order a new hearing aid and not send the broken one in under manufacturer warranty? #2 Why would they not match up? Its the exact same model. She ended up buying a new set of hearing aids in California.

Yesterday when she came to me none of the hearing aids worked. I quickly did a clean and check, replaced wax traps and got them all working. Nothing really wrong with them except dirty wax traps and cosmetic wear. Performed and audiological exam and started to program the 2 best looking aids with her current hearing loss Audiogram.
.......That's when I realized that these hearing aids had mismatched firmware, thus why they would not "match up". After about 15 minutes I had the firmware updated on both instruments and paired together again. The look on my patients face when I did all this in office and handed them back to her. She had to buy a brand new set in California for what I did in 15 minutes!!

She was amazed that I was able to get them going for her and she could hear the same day. She was fearful because of her experience in California that she was going to have to buy another set of hearing aids and other places she called would not even try to fix her current aids.

After the appointment I dropped her and her puppy off at her home because she had no ride.
