Patients always have questions about using their eye insurance verses health insurance. This breaks it down pretty simply. Basically, if you have any medical diagnoses such as cataracts, glaucoma or diabetes, your doctor is going to perform a comprehensive exam to ensure the health of your eye is at it’s best. Your doctor will monitor conditions and offer follow-up appointments or referrals for you depending the need. If you do not have medical diagnoses, an intermediate exam is performed, assessing the vision only. This exam is routine for people who have problems seeing only. There is a difference and this is why many patients have to present their medical insurance instead of their vision insurance. Vision insurance will still be used in the optical setting, which is where glasses are ordered outside of the clinical area. However, offices may not always be able to file your vision insurance due to your eye health needs.
