A meta-analysis of 23 randomized controlled trials by Liu et al. assessed the therapeutic benefits of biotic supplements in people with chronic kidney disease. They included studies on prebiotic, probiotic, and symbiotic supplements in both pre-dialysis and dialysis populations. The analysis showed no benefit in GFR or albumin, but prebiotic supplementation did decrease BUN in both dialysis and pre-dialysis groups. The most significant improvements were noted in oxidative stress (improved total antioxidant capacity, reduced malondialdehyde), inflammation (lowered interleukin-6 in dialysis) and uremic toxins (reduced serum p-cresol in both populations and reduced indoxyl sulfate in dialysis). Prebiotic supplements appear superior in these outcomes compared to probiotics. The authors concluded that biotics are promising for modulating inflammation, oxidative stress and uremic toxins but larger studies are needed to assess outcomes and related impacts on these populations.

this is so true! builds rapport and trust. how do you interact with your patients? one thing i learned over the years is that healthcare providers do not know all the answers, and the best way to get things done is to explode treatment options with patients
