Sometimes moms know something isn’t right, even when everyone else says it’s “normal.” We love helping families get real answers, support, and relief so feeding can finally feel manageable.

If you’re struggling with feeding, trust your instincts. You don’t have to figure it out alone! Our team at Arkansas Lactation is here to help. A second opinion might be just what you need to change everything, whether it’s from a lactation consultant or one of our Occupational Therapists.

A huge thank you to this mom for sharing her experience with us 💛

Feeding is a whole body process that relies on multiple systems working together.

Nervous system 👉🏽 overall regulation (fight or flight vs. rest and digest), coordination, endurance
Musculoskeletal system 👉🏽 posture, stability, range of motion
Oral motor system 👉🏽latch, suck, swallow
Digestive system 👉🏽tolerance, comfort, efficiency

When one system is under stress, feeding often becomes inefficient, uncomfortable, or exhausting, for both baby and parent. For example, if a baby has a head turn preference (musculoskeletal system), their nervous system may become unregulated due to the discomfort trying to latch on their non-preferred side, leading to poor oral suction/seal on that side and more fussiness, impacting their digestive system (think air intake from poor latch). It’s not always “they don’t like to breastfeed,” sometimes their whole system needs to be considered in the feeding picture.

This whole body approach to infant feeding is exactly what our team specializes in. Come see us 🩵

Most importantly, we want you to feel empowered to advocate for yourself and your baby. These classes give you space to ask questions, learn the basics, and feel prepared before you bring your little one home.

Click the second picture to see how much your baby is supposed to eat per meal!

Guess what? Every baby and every meal is different. When starting solids (and especially when entering the toddler years), your little independent eater may gobble up the whole meal one day and ignore the plate of food the next day. Your most important role? Keep offering a variety of foods, textures, flavors, and seasonings!

Want help with starting solids, understanding choking vs. gagging, or preparing baby-led weaning foods? We have a pediatric dietitian who loves guiding you through this exciting stage! What’s your little one’s favorite food? 🫐🍌🍳 are some common faves!

What’s normal? Extra freezers overflowing with bags of milk vs. barely one extra bottle of precious liquid gold?

While social media emphasizes that moms should have frozen storehouses of breast milk, this actually is not necessary or normal for moms who nurse exclusively. Women who nurse all the time may need to combine milk from multiple pumps after feeds to get enough to make an extra bottle.

For someone exclusively pumping—in 24 hours, babies need about 24-32 ounces, so this can be divided by the number of pumping sessions to estimate the amount needed per pump. Pumping 8 times a day would require an average of three ounces per pump to reach the daily need. Remember: milk volume generally changes throughout the day and night, as prolactin increases the milk created overnight.

In summary, every woman’s breast milk storage capacity is different, meaning one person pumps two ounces 12 times a day and another person pumps 6-8 ounces a couple times a day. If you are concerned or in doubt, reach out! Your worth as a mama is not based on your milk supply or the size of your freezer stash! ❤️
