Low supply isn’t always just low supply. Sometimes it’s hormones, labs, underlying conditions, or a baby who has more going on. That’s why looking at the full picture is so important!

We were so glad to walk alongside this family, help connect the dots, and support them in getting real answers. And we’re so thankful she trusted us with her story and shared it here ❤️

Calling all mamas with late spring due dates, this one’s for you 🤍

Let’s help you walk into your breastfeeding journey feeling informed, confident, and supported from day one.

Our Prenatal Breastfeeding Group Classes cover everything from preparing for delivery to what those first hours and days postpartum can really look like. We’ll talk through the golden hour and skin-to-skin, hand expression, latching and positioning, how to support milk supply early on, and so much more. Most importantly, we want you to feel empowered to advocate for yourself and your baby. These classes give you space to ask questions, learn the basics, and feel prepared before you bring your little one home.

We recently completed continuing education reviewing current literature on breastfeeding in the setting of preexisting and gestational diabetes.

One statistic that stood out: breastfeeding may reduce insulin requirements by approximately 15–20% in women with Type 1 diabetes. Lactation is metabolically demanding, and glucose regulation shifts postpartum in ways many families are not prepared for.

But metabolic changes are only one piece. Pregnancy complications, delivery variables, and neonatal stability can also influence early feeding outcomes. When those factors aren’t discussed together, families are often left without context when feeding feels more complex.

Breastfeeding with Type 1 diabetes is absolutely possible! However, it requires anticipatory guidance, close monitoring, and coordinated support. Continuing education directly shapes how our team supports families navigating diabetes and lactation 💜

Bottle sterilizing, do you have to do it every time? Short answer: no.

For most healthy, full-term babies, washing bottles well with hot soapy water (or using the dishwasher with heated dry) is enough for everyday use.

Sterilizing after each use is especially important:
• For premature or NICU babies
• For medically fragile infants
• After illness in the home
• If clean water access is a concern

Outside of those situations, there’s no evidence you need to sterilize after every single feed to keep your baby safe!

Save this for the nights you’re staring at the bottle pile wondering if you have to run it again 💛

And somehow, in the middle of all the feeding and managing and juggling… it becomes the most fun.
Watching them interact. Seeing how different they are.
Realizing you’re more capable than you thought.

Moms of multiples, we see you. 🤍
What part surprised you the most?

For the average 12–24 month old, general guidelines look like:
• 900–1,000 calories per day
• 13 grams of protein per day
• 30–40% of intake from fat

That’s per day, not per meal.

These are population averages. Individual needs vary based on size, growth patterns, activity level, medical history, and genetics. A larger toddler may need more. A smaller toddler may need less. Growth trends matter more than one meal!

Thirteen grams of protein can look like:
• 1 egg (6g)
• 1/2 cup whole milk (4g)
• A few bites of chicken or beans (3–4g)

Toddlers have small stomachs and highly variable appetites. Some days they eat constantly. Some days they barely touch dinner. That pattern is developmentally normal. It’s your job to offer them food, and their job to eat the food.

Simple meal ideas:
• Scrambled egg + fruit + buttered toast
• Full-fat yogurt + peanut butter + banana
• Chicken, avocado, and rice
• Beans + cheese + soft tortilla

If you’re worried about growth, intake, or selective eating, that’s where individualized guidance matters! We have a pediatric RD on staff who offers baby-led weaning visits tailored to your child’s growth and needs.

Save this for the next time you’re staring at their plate wondering if it’s enough 🍎

If you’ve ever dealt with a “clog,” you know how frustrating (and honestly a little scary) it can feel.
Most of us were told it’s thick milk. So we reach for lecithin and hope for the best! But what’s commonly misunderstood is that most “clogs” are actually inflammation and ductal narrowing, which means the issue isn’t about thinning milk. It’s about supporting the tissue and improving drainage. This is where choline comes in!

Choline supports:
• Cell membrane function
• Tissue integrity
• Fat transport
• Healthy milk composition

Choline is naturally found in foods like:
🥚 Egg yolks (one of the richest sources)
🥩 Beef
🐔 Chicken
🐟 Fish
🥦 Cruciferous vegetables
🫘 Beans

Lactating moms need about 550 mg of choline per day to meet adequate intake. Many women don’t reach that consistently through diet alone.

If you’ve been using lecithin, you didn’t do anything wrong! It’s a very common recommendation. You just may not have been given the full picture about what causes clogs in the first place.

At Arkansas Lactation, we stay up to date on the research so you don’t have to dig through studies during a 2am feed. Our goal is always to look at the root cause, not just the quick fix. If you’re dealing with recurring clogs or mastitis, we’re here for you. 💙
