Soma and Psyche

Soma and Psyche Movement for Everyone! Yoga is an ancient philosophy comprise of eight limbs which is most commonly known by the asana limb (yoga poses.)

But portraying yoga in this way is an incomplete picture. Even asana is often viewed in a limited way. Yoga asanas aren't about folding yourself into a pretzel, it's about becoming the asana. What you become one day, may be not be what you are able to become today. Higher Self is about crossing bridges and educating people about how yoga meets them where they are-regardless of religion, fitness, gender or race. It's about having an environment where you feel comfortable and at home so you can explore your own inner landscape. It's about having the right gear; having a map so you can continue your journey with greater ease and joy!

You are not your thoughts. You are the pure awareness that is watching you think.

Watch your mind do it's thing and be amused. Be very amused. ;)

You can have a happy, healthy, productive yoga practice-with only a few simple yoga postures. You do NOT need to be able to do every pose to benefit from yoga. You do NOT need to do anything other than fully inhabit your own body to the best of your ability in that particular moment.

This is a tool I've been using with clients lately and I wanted to share. Self-care is such an overused word these days. It's the hot button-the catch word-the latest hash tag. The truth is, all this attention is making something important feel trite. This worksheet is something that I fill out for myself once a month. It shows me areas that I have self-care deficits in. The best part is...bubble baths aren't on the list ;)

Self-care activities are the things you do to maintain good health and improve well-being. Some self-care activities might already be part of your routine,...

It's so easy to look outside yourself for answers. Lord knows that everyone and their mother is shouting them at you. Facebook, IG, Twitter, all the algorithms telling you what they think you need to hear. Drink water, dump toxic people, manifest positive thoughts, practice gratitude, read, exercise, vote...on and on and on...

The hard part is letting this go, unplugging, snapping the laptop closed, and listening to yourself.

I have a secret friends-only your heart can get you through this mess. Learn to listen and follow it.

Everything else is just noise.

Important!

We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? Too many of us deal with common psychological-health issues on our own, says Guy Winch. But we don’t have to. He makes a compelling case ...

"Yesterday my dad told me something that I think maybe more people need to hear:

You’re allowed to just do things for fun.

He told me that in this modern society, we seem to have this attitude that we shouldn’t do something unless we’re aiming to be the best at it. If we can’t sing like Beyonce or Frank Sinatra or something there’s no point to singing. If we can’t make the next big breakthrough there’s no point in looking into mechanics and engineering.

But, he tells me, it took him a long time to figure out that life doesn’t have to be a race. If you want to take up the piano when you’re a teenager or later you’re not going to master it. You’re not going to be able to play to huge concert halls, but that also shouldn’t stop you. You can study a language out of curiosity and then drop the ball if you want. You can just get okay at something or even be terrible at it. You can drop it for days or years and then pick it up again and it doesn’t have to be a shameful thing.

I’m really glad he told me that because today I opened my sketchpad for the first time in months and just started drawing. And it looks terrible. But I don’t care. I don’t have the talent or patience or spacial awareness to get anywhere near good at drawing, but it’s fun. It helps me focus my mind and nobody has to see it.

And because of what he told me, I’m thinking maybe someday soon I will take up the bass guitar. And I won’t worry about how well I do, or how fast I learn, or that I haven’t played an instrument since sixth grade, or that I don’t have that much time to practice. I’m just gonna enjoy the experience. Maybe I’ll try swing dancing again and take a class because I’m not the best dancer but damn if it isn’t fun.

Yeah, you don’t have to be good at things. It’s not a requirement. Maybe that seems obvious but it had never occurred to me before. You’re allowed to just enjoy what you’re doing. For me, that feels like a life changing revelation. I don’t have to be good at something to like it. I don’t have to put 100% effort into everything I do. It’s kind of amazing." —what-even-is-thiss
