Wow, it's June already! Most of us thought the warm weather would never get here. Now that it has, you might be tempted to jump right in and get your outside "to do" list done! Pace yourself, it has been a long winter and unless you are in tip top shape it's best to ease into all those chores. Enjoy the weather, lather on the sunscreen, visit your local farmers market and have a great June šŸ™‚

When you consider gifts for Christmas, have you thought about the gift that could save a life?

Do You Have A Carbon Monoxide Detector?

Carbon monoxide (sometimes referred to as CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning material containing carbon. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it; but carbon monoxide can kill you.

Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless, and colorless gas is known as the "silent killer."

Carbon monoxide is produced by common household appliances. When not properly ventilated, carbon monoxide emitted by these appliances can build up.

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue, are often mistaken for the flu because the deadly gas goes undetected in a home. Prolonged exposure can lead to brain damage and even death.

If you do not have a carbon monoxide detector...get one today and urge family members and friends to do the same.

THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY JUST BE YOUR OWN

Have a perfect in every way holiday season filled with all of the people and things that make your heart happy.

Friday April 7, 2017 is World Health Day.
Each year the World Health Organization focus is on a different health problem. This year the focus is on depression.

WHO has identified strong links between depression and other noncommunicable disorders and diseases. Depression increases the risk of substance use disorders and diseases such as diabetes and heart disease; the opposite is also true, meaning that people with these other conditions have a higher risk of depression.

Depression is also an important risk factor for su***de, which claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year. Said Dr Saxena: ā€œA better understanding of depression and how it can be treated, while essential, is just the beginning. What needs to follow is sustained scale-up of mental health services accessible to everyone, even the most remote populations in the world.ā€

Depression is a common mental illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that people normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for 14 days or longer.

In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or su***de.

If you find yourself struggling with what could be depression, we are here to help.

It is our goal to help you feel better.

Here at Fenton Family Medicine "Spring Fever" is in the air. We are still some time away from reaping fresh produce from our own gardens and local farms but this will help you make more informed decisions on the produce we feed ourselves and our families.

Nearly two-thirds of over 3,000 produce samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2015 contained pesticide residues - a surprising finding in the face of soaring consumer demand for food without agricultural chemicals. Walking into a grocery store can be daunting. We have so many choices when it comes to our food and prices for organic foods have been coming down. Do the best you can. Even small changes add up to big time results. Enjoy good food with family and friends. Your health will thank you for it!

February is American Heart Month

WE HAVE AN AWESOME STAFF! They work very hard to ensure you have the best possible experience from the time you enter our office until the time you leave. Please help them by being proactive in your health as well as your insurance coverage. On a monthly basis, we deal with hundreds (yes hundreds) of insurance companies as well as different coverage within the policies. It is your responsibility to understand what your policy covers as it is your contract with them. Our contract is with you and your health. We will do all we can to help you so please be patient with our amazing staff :)

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 600,000 Americans each year. And it’s why we devote the entire month of February to raising awareness of heart health. You should also know:

•Cardiovascular disease kills more people each year than cancer, lower respiratory diseases and accidents.

•Cigarette smokers are two to three times more likely to die from coronary heart disease than nonsmokers.

•Heart disease is the number one killer in women age 20 and over, killing approximately one woman every minute.

So what can you do to protect yourself from heart disease? While there are some risk factors you can’t control, such as age, gender, heredity, race and diabetes, there are risk factors for heart disease you CAN control, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, exercise, obesity and stress.

Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and engage in healthy activities you enjoy. Don’t smoke and limit how much alcohol you drink. You should also talk with your health care provider about your heart care. Talk to him or her about monitoring your blood pressure, testing your cholesterol levels and regularly monitoring your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.

We can help you achieve your healthy goals.
