Meet MAPS new doctor!

Greetings! My name is Dr. Jalesa Johnson, and I am thankful to be part of the MAPS team in Amelia Island. I hold a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology at Washington DC. My educational and field experience included assignments at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington DC and the ·Federal Medical Center in Rochester, with a concentration on forensics, psychological evaluations, and treatment of diverse populations including military members, civilians, inmates, and children. I specialize in treating schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders, and personality disorders. I also treat individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. In addition to psychotherapy, I will be conducting neuropsychological assessments at MAPS.
I am a strong believer in client centered therapy and teamwork. I will be right by your side on your journey to becoming the person you were always meant to be. Remember, your journey is not like any others, and this moment when you are reading this profile is where yours begins.
While I enjoy creating and embarking on diverse therapeutic journeys with each of my clients, I also enjoy diversifying my time outside of work. Spending time at the beach is one of my favorite things to do in addition to bowling, going to the movies, traveling, attending carnivals/fairs/festivals, and crocheting.
I look forward to working with you soon!

Dr. Barreto finished decorating the transcranial magnetic stimulation room and scheduling for brain mapping starts this week. There are more people on the waiting list than what we can handle in the next seven weeks, but we will schedule as far out as we have to and who knows, we may get a second chair and move people up. Don’t worry, Carin’s wrath after hearing we have to call so may people on Monday is reserved for her boss. Dr. Soleh just puts up with our shenanigans!

Those who are patients at MAPS know this is a picture of Dr. Dutchak, psychiatrist, and Ross Wise, psychiatric nurse practitioner, experiencing what TMS treatment will feel like for their patients. With TMS, magnetic coils generate a local electric field that crosses the cranium and activates the electrical activity of neurons in the brain. When a neuron is stimulated repeatedly, it initiates the formation of new synaptic connections through a process called LTP (long-term potentiation). Unlike medications that temporarily alter brain chemistry, TMS aims to retrain your brain, providing structural and functional changes that endure, with little to no side effects. Studies show that TMS can lead to i increased synaptic strength, improved neurotransmitter release (especially serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate, and long-lasting changes in cortical thickness and grey matter density in mood-related areas. TMS doesn’t just reduce symptoms—it helps rebuild the foundation for emotional stability, clarity, and cognitive flexibility. Studies show a 56% reduction in memory loss in Alzheimer's patients and up to 96% increase in independence. The treatment is FDA approved and insurance covered for OCD, Depression, Anxious Depression, PTSD and migraines. It is being used off label to reduce cognitive impairment with great success. If you know someone struggling with deep depression and cognitive decline, this would be a great option for them. TMS training was so fun today. What I love about our team is that they don’t think twice when an opportunity to do something innovative arises. We roll with it , figure it out , and master it. Will post more about the treatment itself soon! This post is a shoutout to the most amazing group of people. Dr. Felix Soleh we missed you today.

My Facebook account apparently got hacked and business related posts were deleted. My last one was on the day this picture was taken. Resilient as I am, I’m posting again. I am going around my clinics taking pictures of our team for a publication we are sending out in the mail advertising all the new things we are doing. It is a new chapter for MAPS and I could not be more proud. No worries I’m not selling our clinics, not now , and not any time in the foreseeable future.

One of my patients asked me” do you know the people in your life?” I said well of course yes. She responded , “yes but do you really know the people in your life, you know the person who brings you food in the restaurant, the one that brings your mail, changes your oil, directs traffic at the kids’ school and the teachers, cleans the building where you work? I always asked their names and if they have a family and make them feel like they matter.” Needless to say, this was a session that benefited me more than anything that happened that day. Our community has changed since I moved to Amelia Island 11 years ago, but the people are still there, bringing the mail, selling you stuff at the farmers market, checking you in at urgent care, trying to find a parking spot. I thought about this as I ate at the new Indian restaurant last night. the owners are so nice and the food is so amazing! I learned they painted and decorated the place themselves, somehow managing to paint a teal wall to be the perfect contrast with inexpensive but gorgeous golden lamps. The painting of the ceiling navy blue was a brave move! They come from Jacksonville and I hope they do well. If you have one of those people in your life that deserves a shoutout, message me. I am going to start posting about them on my business page, if they give me their permission. I anticipate that many of them won’t. So ask them their names, and if they have a family.

Nothing makes me happier at my desk than doing our productivity reports and finding out all our clinicians are absolutely killing it and thinking about the wonderful humans they are. So thankful for our team! We did great this year and we are projected to bump it up next year. Love you all.

Black and white pictures have a timeless quality. Perhaps it is because the first pictures ever developed from a camera had no color due to limitations in early technology and suddenly we dont know what year it is when we look at them, or maybe because it makes our eye focus on contrast, making the contextual elements that tell time kind of meaningless. I thought I would celebrate my friend and colleague Dr. Dutchak by posting a black and white picture because she really is timeless, and, when you are around her the background noise stops mattering and all that matters is you as a person. Denise Dutchak it was your birthday this week and we owe you the usual white cake at MAPS when we all return! But I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you for making everything better and for making all of us feel we are perfect the way we are no matter how messy. Love u.
