Therapist Spotlight: Nikki!

Nikki is a Board Certified and State Licensed Massage Therapist, who has been practicing since she graduated from Irene’s Myomassology Institute in May 2005. She uses a combination of deep tissue as well as relaxation techniques to create a therapeutic massage tailored to each client’s needs and preferences.

IN THE HOT SEAT:

• How do you practice self-care and avoid burn out?
Vacations, yoga, and time with friends.

• What is one tool or product you can’t live without in your massage room?
The electric table. It makes it so much easier to adjust for leverage and pressure for each client, while practicing good body mechanics so I don’t get injured.

• What is something that clients might be surprised to learn about you?
When I was in kindergarten, I wrote a short children’s book that was made available in the Saginaw public libraries.

• What is your go-to playlist or favorite artist to listen to after a long day?
I’m an 80’s hairband gal!

• If you weren’t a massage therapist, what do you think you would be doing?
Probably an event planner. When I left my former career as an administrative assistant, the two things that interested me were massage therapy and event planning. I took a one day intro class for massage and loved it so much, I immediately signed up for the program.

Probably a little space heater in the winter so my muscles stay warmed up and comfortable as I'm working. One massage tool I have become a big fan of is cups, I often cup myself at home and I love to incorporate those into my deep tissue massages with clients.

• What is your dream vacation spot?
I really want to make my way to the Sedona Arizona area. I'd love to explore the energy work happening out there, experience the vortex's, and take in the majestic scenery.

• What is something that clients might be surprised to learn about you?
I was on the Maury Show in the fifth grade. It was a wishes and dreams themed episode and Maury hooked me up by paying for my braces. Had them for 4 years! I got myself there by writing him a letter without my parents knowledge!

FAQ Spotlight: Can I Get a Massage if I Have a Medical Condition?

Absolutely! But your safety and comfort come first! Open communication ensures your therapist can give you the best possible care tailored to your needs.

Your health matters to us. Completing and updating your Client Profile before each session lets your therapist know about any health concerns, recent surgeries, or injuries. This information guides us in creating a safe, effective massage experience for you.

Working with Your Healthcare Provider - If you’re currently under a doctor’s care, written approval for massage therapy may be recommended. We’re always happy to stay in touch with your physician to ensure you’re getting the right kind of treatment for your condition.

Self-Care Tips for a Busy Season

*Schedule "Me Time" in Advance
Just like any other appointment, set aside time in your calendar for self-care. Whether it’s a massage, yoga session, or even a quiet moment with a good book, putting it on your schedule ensures it doesn’t get overlooked.

*Stay Active
Physical activity is an excellent way to manage stress, improve mood, and maintain physical health. Take breaks for walks or stretch during your workday. Regular movement, combined with massage therapy, will help keep the body feeling balanced.

*Practice Mindful Breathing
Take a few moments during the day to engage in mindful breathing or meditation. Even just five minutes of deep breathing can help reset the mind and calm the nervous system, helping to reduce stress throughout the day.

*Get Enough Sleep
Stress often leads to poor sleep habits, but ensuring you get enough rest is vital for mental clarity and productivity. Try creating a calming bedtime routine to signal your body it's time to wind down—this might include activities like reading, gentle stretching, or turning off screens an hour before sleep.

*Set Boundaries
In busy seasons, it’s important to know when to prioritize your own well-being over social obligations or work demands. Setting healthy boundaries prevents overextending yourself and preserves energy for the things that truly matter.

Did you know?
How best to prepare for a massage appointment:

Before Your Massage
It is best not to eat for at least 90 minutes before your massage treatment—and only have a light meal at that time.

This is a similar process to swimming or working out, when your body diverts blood away from digestion and sends it to the working peripheral tissues, which can result in poor digestion and possible discomfort.

After a Massage
Hydrate first: Massage can dehydrate you slightly, so drink water before eating to help flush out released toxins.

Stick to light meals: After a massage, your body is in a relaxed, detoxifying state. Heavy or greasy foods may cause sluggishness or discomfort.

Listen to your body: Some people feel hungry right after a massage, others don’t. Either response is normal.
