Stepping in to help during a medical emergency, Paetow High School senior Olivia Hanawalt put her training into action when a community member collapsed and needed immediate care. Drawing on skills learned through the Emergency Medical Technician program at Miller Career and Technology Center, she provided aid until first responders arrived.

Harris County ESD 48 later recognized Hanawalt for her quick thinking and willingness to help, presenting her with a special honor in front of her classmates.

Hanawalt is working toward a future in healthcare and has earned her Emergency Medical Responder certification while still in high school. In addition to the EMT program, she serves on the Katy ISD Safety and Security Student Advisory Board, is a member of Psi Alpha Psychology National Honor Society and volunteers in the community.

Her goal is to become a labor and delivery or emergency room nurse and continue helping others when they need it most.
