We are deeply encouraged by a recent real-life example of the kind of training students are receiving at the Wesleyan University of Haiti School of Nursing. On a recent Sunday afternoon at a beach on La Gonave, a 6-year-old boy was pulled from the water unconscious after nearly drowning. Thimotée Joseph, a nursing student, responded immediately, using his training to assess the child and begin clearing water from his lungs. Within minutes, the boy began breathing again and was taken to La Gonave Wesleyan Hospital, accompanied by Thimotée, where he was cared for and later sent home with his family.
Because of a rapid and skilled response, a young life was saved. This is the kind of impact the School of Nursing is having on La Gonave, equipping students with the skill and compassion to act when it matters most.
