Wellness Wednesday

Vitamin D. is an essential, fat soluble vitamin. It is important in bone growth, as well as reducing inflammation, glucose metabolism, and immune function, as well as a possible cause of depression.

It occurs naturally in only a few foods and is often added to other food thorugh a fortification process. The other main source of Vitamin D is through sun exposure, which trigger Vitamin D synthesis in the skin.

It is important note that due to its fat solubility, it is possible to have too much Vitamin D in your system so it is mportant to get your levels checked during blood tests. Experts recommend a Vitamin D blood level of 50-70 ng/mL for optimal function. The next time you have blood work done, ask for Vitamin D levels to be checked to see if you could benefit form supplementation!

Wellness Wednesday

Seasonal depression generally starts in the fall and lasts through the winter. It can be caused by the shorter, colder, and darker days as well as the stress related to the holidays and winter weather. Here are a few tips you can try if you are feeling the winter blues.

Find the sunlight
- Get up a few minutes earlier and spend time in the sunlight each morning. This allows our body to maintain its natural, internal clock which can be disrupted during the shorter, darker days of winter.

Exercise
- Movement such as walking or jogging for 30 minutes/day causes your body to release endorphins that help combat derpression

Engage in social activity
- Humans are social by nature! Engaging in social activties with others helps us feel more connected and safe. You can double up on healthy behaviors and create an exercise group to see the benefits of both social and physcial activity.

Tip Tuesday

On top of all the joy the holidays bring, there is also a lot of stress. Try the 4-7-8 breathing meditation to relax if you find yourself feeling overwhlemed.

Deep, rhythmic breathing exercises like the 4-7-8 technique promote relaxation and stress relief. It only takes about a minute (4 cycles of breath) for you to start feeling more relaxed. To start, find a comfrotable seated or lying position. Inahle slowly through your nose to a count of 4. Hold that breath for 7 seconds. Slowly exhale out of your mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat this a minimum of 4 times, then return to your normal breathing. Pro tip- when exhaling, keep you lips pursed tightly like you’re blowing thorugh a straw to slowly control the exhale.

Tip Tuesday

Avoid back injuries when decorating and shopping this season by using proper lifting technique. Remember to lift with your legs and not your back.👍🏼

Follow these steps for proper lifting technique:
- Stand close to the object you want to lift
- Bend your knees and hips, keeping your back straight
- Engage your core muscles to stabalize your body
- Use your leg muscles to lift the boject, keeping it close to your body
- Avoid twisting your back or bending forward at the waist

If you do hurt your back this winter, give us a call at (845) 897-2402, or visit our website in our bio to schedule an appointment!

Wellness Wednesday —

Staying consistent in our habits and routines is one of the most important markers for our helath and well being. It is more beneficial to make a smaller change that you will stick to consistnently than try to make a massive change that is too hard to commit to routine.

Sticking to a healthy routine improves our brain’s “reward loop”which means that our brain releases chemicals like dopamine, reinforcing the motivation to keep going. Once this happens, you will find that habbits like exercise and eating well become addicting!

Remember that forming habbits does take time, so just stay consistent! Because of the positive brain “reward loop” if you put in the work in the beginning, the positive changes will become “habits” later on. Small habits done daily beat big efforts done rarely.
