Occupational Therapy Month Highlights Impact of Care at Dorminy Medical Center
April marks Occupational Therapy Month, a time to recognize the meaningful impact occupational therapists have on individuals of all ages. At Dorminy Medical Center, occupational therapy plays a vital role in helping patients participate in the activities—or “occupations”—that matter most to them, from daily self-care to returning to work and engaging in meaningful routines.
Occupational therapists at Dorminy Medical Center provide care across multiple settings, including outpatient, inpatient, and swing bed services. This continuum of care ensures that patients receive the support they need at every stage of their recovery journey. Whether working with individuals recovering from surgery, illness, or injury, or supporting those managing chronic conditions, occupational therapy practitioners focus on restoring independence and improving overall quality of life.
In inpatient and swing bed settings, occupational therapists help patients regain essential daily living skills such as dressing, bathing, and mobility—preparing them for a safe and successful return home. Through outpatient services, therapy continues by addressing higher-level skills, including strengthening, coordination, and adapting to everyday challenges in the home and community.
Outpatient occupational therapy services at Dorminy Medical Center also include pediatric care, supporting children in developing the skills needed for everyday success. Therapists work with children to improve fine motor skills, sensory processing, coordination, and self-care abilities. By partnering with families, they help children build confidence and independence while reaching important developmental milestones at home and in school.
Occupational therapy at Dorminy Medical Center extends beyond physical recovery. Therapists also address cognitive, emotional, and sensory needs—helping patients improve memory, problem-solving abilities, and coping strategies. By working closely with patients, families, and the broader healthcare team, they provide a personalized and holistic approach to care.
Occupational therapy supports individuals across the lifespan. From helping adults regain independence after hospitalization to assisting older adults in maintaining safe and active lifestyles, the goal remains the same: empowering individuals to live life as fully and independently as possible.
This Occupational Therapy Month, Dorminy Medical Center proudly recognizes the dedication, compassion, and expertise of its occupational therapy team. Our Occupational Therapist, Jane Ellen Reese, and our Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant, Eve Harrell, are here to assist patients daily with all of their OT needs. Their commitment makes a lasting difference in the lives of patients and continues to strengthen the health and well-being of the community.
