Believe it or not I didn’t even fall the whole 50 miles…

Hopped into pass mountain 50 over the weekend and I don’t remember the last time I ran such technical, rocky trails 😅

Fun to be able to run over 50k (been a while) and here are some takes from the run:

1. I’ll always stop to take a video of a rattlesnake
2. C90 tastes exactly the same coming out as it did going in, only warm
3. Rocks make bad toilet paper
4. Trying to catch is a fools game
5. Flagstaff has made me soft in the heat, but ice bandanas are legit

Anytime I work with a runner, I ask them to squat as low as they can. During things I’m checking for a few things.

1. How low they can go — this gives me an idea of mobility in a few different areas. To go real low, it generally requires full ankle dorsiflexion, knee flexion and hip flexion. If they can get all the way down, we start teasing out where the mobility restriction is coming from.

2. How they go down — I’m looking to see if movement is different side to side, if they hinge rather than squat, and what strategies they use to get down. This gives me an idea of motor control and imbalances side to side.

3. How they feel — whether it’s pain or subjective feelings of stiffness, weakness, balance issues, it’s helpful to know what pops up during this as this is a big identifier into areas to work.

Can you squat all the way down?

And to clarify, you don’t need to be able to squat all the way down to run well and without issues, but it gives good identifying information on areas to work.

Strength season is upon us! Well… all seasons should be strength season but now’s a good time to start too. Especially runners who are pulling back during winter and plan to race in the spring.

Check out my latest Substack article (link in bio) to hear some thoughts on creating a successful winter plan + find a completely free guide in the article you can download to help with this.

A more in-depth look at different issues in the knee, a helpful guide if you’re trying to figure out what your knee issue actually is which can be helpful in some situations. It’s about common injuries, telling them apart, and concepts of what to do for each.

Probably my last post about knees for a min 👍
