Hantavirus is a serious, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease spread by deer mice. You can get infected by touching or breathing in the virus. It cannot be spread person to person.
Hantavirus may feel like the flu - fatigue, fever, body aches, and cough. Symptoms usually start 1-6 weeks after contact. Seek medical care right away if you become sick after entering or working in unoccupied spaces where mice may live.
The best way to prevent Hantavirus is to get rid of mice in and around your home. Air out spaces for at least 30 minutes before cleaning or moving objects. Seal up any holes and gaps as small as 1/4 inch. Trap up any mice that may be in your home, shed, or vehicle. Clean out mice droppings, urine, saliva, and nesting materials safely.
How to stay safe when cleaning:
Always wear a HEPA or N95 mask and gloves. Goggles are recommended as well. Spray and soak mice materials with disinfectant for 5 minutes. To make your own, mix 1.5 cups of bleach with 1 gallon of hot water. Wipe up and trash mice materials with paper towels. Disinfect area again. Double bag all materials used in clean-up. Trash immediately. Wash gloves and soak reusable mice traps. Wash bare hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
