Medical imaging helps providers understand what’s happening inside the body when symptoms alone don’t tell the full story. Different scans are used for different reasons, and each provides unique information that guides care.
➡️ Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images in real time. It is often used to evaluate the gallbladder, thyroid, soft tissues, blood flow, and abdominal organs. Ultrasound is noninvasive and does not use radiation, making it a common first step in evaluation.
➡️ CT scans (computed tomography) provide detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT imaging is frequently used to assess abdominal pain, appendicitis, trauma, hernias, sinus conditions, and internal inflammation or infection. It allows providers to see organs, bones, and blood vessels clearly and quickly.
➡️ MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses magnetic fields to produce highly detailed images of soft tissues. MRI is often used when more precise imaging is needed for areas such as soft tissue structures, nerves, certain abdominal organs, or head and neck conditions. It does not use radiation and can be helpful when symptoms are complex or ongoing.
➡️ X-rays are commonly used to evaluate bones, lungs, and certain structural concerns. They may be part of trauma follow-up or used to rule out specific conditions quickly.
Imaging does not automatically mean surgery. In many cases, scans help rule out serious conditions, confirm a diagnosis, guide monitoring, or support non-surgical treatment options. When surgery is recommended, imaging helps ensure it is the safest and most appropriate choice.
If imaging has been recommended or you have questions about what a scan can show, our specialty providers are here to guide you through the process.
