Today is 雨水;Yǔshuǐ literally translated as ‘rain water’ is the second solar term and the second stage of spring. Rain water signifies that there will be more rain, in both frequency and volume.

The theme of springtime is about new possibilities and the excitement. Over the next fifteen days nature will reveal the clear signs of spring. Pay attention, follow and align yourself with the movement of the cosmos.
It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 330° (start Pisces) - February 19 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 345° (middle Pisces) - March 5th.

Today is Chinese New Year's day, the second new moon after the winter solstice. Today is the first day of the Chinese Calendar year 4723, the year of the Yang Fire Horse.
The Chinese Lunisolar Calendar
From ancient times people have recognized that the most important heavenly bodies, the sun and moon, have the greatest influence on the earth, it's nature and it's inhabitants. The solar positions are represented by the 24-solar terms. The phases of the moon are represented by the dates for the month. The creation of a calendar is a way we can help humans follow the sun and moon more consciously, to respect with the great forces that surround and permeate us. We can use these celestial events as markers in the year to remind us of how we can better ourselves towards becoming cultivated human beings.
The Chinese New Year represents a collaboration of the solar and lunar forces, combining the solar spring (Feb 4) position with the closest new moon to create a position in the annual cycle with the greatest Yang Qi, a new spring Qi, a new year, a new cycle, a new opportunity. The start of a cycle represents a time to release the old and embrace the new.

Today is 立春 Lìchūn literally translated as ‘start of spring’ is the first solar term of the year and the first stage of spring. The closest new-moon to Lichun is the Chinese New Year and the beginning of the lunisolar calendar. This year CNY is Feb 17 - Fire Horse year begins!
The start of spring represents ‘rebirth’ of nature. Over the last three months nature retreated into the earth and now the Qi is preparing to expand outward again. Over the next three months the earth is in the greatest yang phase of exuberant growth!
People often celebrate the beginning of Lichun by annual cleaning and clearing of their homes and with special events, worship, offerings and ceremonies for a blissful and prosperous new year.
The emotional-theme for the beginning of a cycle: Release the Old & Embrace the New!
Lichun begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 315° (middle Aquarius) - February 4 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 330° (start Pisces) - February 18-19.

Today is 大寒 Dàhán literally translated as major cold’ is the 24th, and final, solar period of the year. This is most often the coldest 15-days and the turning point in temperature.
This final solar period, Dàhán, represents accepting that some things in life are too big and beyond our circle of influence to change. In these situations, the wisest thing to do is accept our limitations and retreat to work on ourselves!
It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 300° (start Aquarius) - January 20 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 315° (middle Aquarius) - February 4.

Today is 小寒 Xiǎohán literally translated as ‘minor cold’ is the 23rd solar period. It is also the second-last 15-day solar-period of the lunisolar calendar. Over the next 30-days, we will experience the coldest part of the year.
However, even as the temperature continues to fall, cheer up as energetically we are already heading towards spring and summer.
Energy, or Qi, comes before matter and leads matter. So, even though it is still getting colder, it is now time to start moving up and out with the Yang Qi and pushing through against the odds. Don’t allow harsh external conditions to discourage you. Time to let the world know what you are really here for!
It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 285° (middle Capricorn) - January 5 - and ends when it reaches the longitude of 300° (Start Aquarius) - January 20.

Today is 小雪 Xiǎoxuě literally translated as ‘minor snow’ is the 20th solar term. Snow flurries begin to paint the landscape white while the environment becomes colder and harsher.
Instinctively, we brace against winter cold by tightening up. It’s hard to smile when we feel the cold sting of winter. The frigid environment creates tension, which impedes the flow of Qi, weakens our immune system, and undermines our capacity for emotional balance.
We can counterbalance the climatic stress by having fun. The most important traditional celebrations happen during the depths of winter. Singing, dancing, exercising, and warm family celebrations with tea, soup and a little alcohol to warm and relax us.
Minor snow begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 240° (start Sagittarius) - Nov 22 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 255° (middle Sagittarius) - Dec 7.

11/07/2025

Today is 立冬 Lìdōng literally translated as the ‘start of winter’ and is the first of the six seasonal phases that constitute the season of winter.
We are at the three-quarter point in the annual cycle. There is a feeling we are in the ‘home-stretch’ and we may feel a renewal of energy to see us through to the finish line. Use this energy wisely and be aware not to overdo it.
Winter is the final phase of the annual cycle and it is useful to compare the ‘feeling’ of the cycles to the one we know best, our life cycle. If we think about the final phase in relation to our life, we think old age and wisdom. Winter embodies these attributes as the oldest and wisest part of the year.
Over the next three months, reflect on your experiences this year to develop insights, and use those insights to guide yourself and others towards higher potential.
Lìdōng begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 225° (middle Scorpio) - November 7 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 240° (start Sagittarius) - November 22.

Today is 霜降 Shuāngjiàng literally translated as ‘frost descent’ is the 18th solar term. The last solar term of autumn marks a sharp drop in temperature and the end of the golden harvest season. This is the time to enjoy Mother Nature's final burst of color before the Yang submits to the rising Yin of winter. Moisture condenses on tree leaves and branches or on the ground forming frost, hence the name shuang jiang, or frost's descent.’
The end of autumn is also a season of change, where dryness and cold become the main environmental elements. Imbalance and illness are prone to surfacing at this time – particularly in the metal element – Lung and Large Intestine. It's best to dress so that the body skin is completely covered (particularly feet and lower body warm), stay out of the strong wind and eat all cooked foods, especially root vegetables, winter squash, barley, rice, and spices like garlic, ginger and black pepper, which may help to support Lung functions and alleviate dampness. Cooked apples and pears can be a wonderful seasonal relief for dry throats and cough.
Frost descent begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 210° (start Scorpio) - October 23 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 225° (middle Scorpio) - November 7.

Today is 寒露 Hánlù literally translated as ‘cold dew’ is the 17th solar term and the fifth stage of Autumn. The qualities of Fall are peaking and during the next six months, the ground will be too cold to comfortably walk barefoot.

During Cold Dew, the 寒 Hán (Cold) Qi becomes prevalent and we should take precautions, as we are increasingly susceptible to catching a cold.

Hánlù starts when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 195° (middle Libra) - October 8 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 210° (Start Scorpio) - October 23.

The Three Pentads (5-day pentads within this 15 day solar term):
1. 鴻雁來賓, 'The guest geese arrive'
2. 雀入大水為蛤, 'The sparrows enter the ocean and become clams'
3. 菊有黃華, 'Chrysanthemums bloom yellow'

09/24/2025

Today is 秋分 Qiūfēn literally translated as ‘autumn equinox’ is the 16th solar term and one of two points in the annual cycle where the celestial plane intersects the equatorial plane.
At the equinox, the opposing forces of Yin and Yang come into balance as the length of day and the length of night become equal. When two opposing forces are in harmony, peace and beauty are manifest and this beauty of nature inspires us. Communicate with the self and others in the most beautiful and gentle way.
Keep an eye out for beautiful sunsets at this time of the year!
Take a moment to ponder the meaning in your life and the life you choose to live.
The equinox occurs when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 180° (start Libra) - September 23 - and ends when it reaches the longitude of 195° (middle Libra) - October 8.

08/23/2025

Today is 處暑 Chǔshǔ literally translated as ‘limit of heat’ is the 14th solar term and the signs of autumn start to become obvious. Days are still warm but at sunrise and sunset, you will notice a distinct coolness in the air.
It is the second term in the autumn period and the descending yang Qi in the northern hemisphere more obviously affects us both outwardly in the environment and inwardly in our attitude. Emotionally, the season is transitioning to be a time of contemplation and reflection. Physically, a time to be cautious of the Earth Phase – digestive conditions.
It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 150° (Start Virgo) - August 23 - and ends when it reaches the longitude of 165° (Middle Virgo) - September 7.
