Prepping for pregnancy

Consciously preparing for pregnancy will look different for every individual. Some guidelines for inspiration:

* Begin taking those prenatal vitamins at least 6 months in advance
* Consider seeing your primary care doctor for an annual exam and annual lab work
* Ask for a CBC, CMP, Vitamin D3, Vitamins B12 and folate, Thyroid Panel, Lipid Panel
* Reduce toxin exposures at home and at work
* The Healthy Living App lets you scan home and body products for an overall rating (aim for 2 or below)
* If you’re on hormonal contraception (The Pill, Implanon, Depo shots, Mirena/Skyla/Liletta IUD) consider supporting the transition when you decide to go off it. Your body may need help making its own hormones again.
* Eat those nutrient dense foods and nourish yourself so you can nourish your baby. Sometimes a 21-Day Detox is a good fit.
* Mental health is just as important, prepping your mental-emotional self is part of the process too.

It’s Friday and I’m feeling ready for a cocktail tonight.

Alcohol consumption opens a Pandora’s box of questions in the medical community. As does anything with a fine line between enjoyment and disease.

We have statistics of what is considered binge drinking (4+ drinks within 2 hours) and how many drinks a week one can imbibe “healthily.” Males get allotted more drinks than females and there is that possible myth floating around that a few glasses of red wine a night are heart healthy.

What are we to do when it seems like a healthy relationship with alcohol is a college level math equation?

When I’m on the end of answering that question, I use another question. “For what purpose do you drink?”

Is it social, to unwind after a long day, to forget, to celebrate, because everyone else does, to reduce anxiety, to sleep?

I’d like to make the point that instead of just “how much are we drinking” we can also look at it as “why are we drinking.”

Alcohol itself is not “bad” and numbers and statistics cannot define a person or their physical/emotional/mental wellbeing.

Perhaps a change in the conversation is indicated...?
