I loved The Last Unicorn as a kid. I also love inner child and attachment work. I have a picture of myself as a 5 year old on my bathroom mirror so I can say hello to that little girl every morning, and goodnight to her every evening. I remind her that someone (me) loves and is looking out for her. It’s a process.

The more you know:

Some historical context for the origin of Asperger’s Syndrome. We no longer recognize this term as a diagnosis in the DSM-V, and instead, look to Autism Spectrum Disorder when applicable.

Every individual has the freedom to identify as what is comfortable for them, as some of this language (namely, “Aspies”,) has provided a sense of inclusion for this community. It is not my job as counselor to suggest otherwise!

Still, I make the conscious decision as a clinician and community member not to use the term myself. This history is important, and ultimately my hope is that all neurodivergent clients and patients receive the treatment, services, and support that they need. To ensure so in this case, the language used absolutely matters.

If you’re interested in learning more, I highly recommend reading Asperger’s Children by Edith Sheffer. I will also attach the Fatherly article by Melaina Juntti highlighted in these slides.

As Covid-19 vaccinations become available for almost 19 million children in the United States, I am remembering all those who did not get their chance to receive protection.

Lately, things are beginning to feel a lot like the did during the pre-pandemic world. It is wonderful, in a lot of ways. Just try to stay mindful that a lot of us are still grieving.

Holding lots of emotions myself these days: immense gratitude for my 4 year old’s upcoming vaccine appointment. Sadness for the families that have lost children and loved ones. Relief for all of the worried caretakers and anxious kids awaiting their turns. Concern for those that still cannot get vaccinated. Faith that our collective efforts will help protect those that can’t.
…to name a few.

devastated. this is a dark day.

North Carolina is about to become flooded as our neighboring states for miles begin to ban abortions. I will continue to post legal resources here for anyone interested.

Just now, I was talking with a friend about the Roe vs. Wade overturn. So much pain and fear. Signing off, I told her that I was holding space for her. And anyone with a uterus. Her reply: “You’re in my thoughts and my fire as well.” This sums it up for me. Our rage is rightful. Back to the same old fight we’ve been fighting for centuries we go.

I am holding you all in my thoughts and my fire. ❤️‍🔥
