⭐️STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Amy Lake 🥰
💡How long have you been practicing yoga?
18 years.
💌Why did you start practicing?
Initially, I started practicing yoga to combat back pain that was caused by scoliosis. But very quickly, I realized all of the mental and physical benefits of being on my mat.
🧘♂️How has yoga helped you physically?
Yoga is truly my medicine!! I no longer suffer from crippling migraines and mid/upper back pain.
The breath work of yoga has helped me in my daily life. I rely on breathing techniques when I’m stressed or anxious to calm my nervous system and refocus
💕How has yoga helped you mentally or emotionally?
I love the fact that my mat is always waiting for me no matter what’s going on around me! I was the sole caretaker of my late husband who had colon cancer. The practice of yoga provided me with quiet and space to think and pray and process his cancer journey. Yoga is my happy place. Yoga has allowed me to see how strong I am even when I feel weak. I never finish a practice without having more clarity and peace than before I began. It allows me to reflect and find gratitude for the miracle of life!
☺️How has your practice changed over time?
As a beginner, I was really focused on getting all of the poses “right”. I missed out on the whole picture of yoga though! As the years of practicing passed, I found the beauty and fun of yoga in the messy days of falling out of the poses and trying again! I prefer HOT yoga because I love to sweat and work my body hard but I also love Yin and Restorative days because that’s a gift to my body too. I’ve learned that each day is different and that the practice of yoga is a lifelong journey of knowing my body and accepting myself as I am that day and in that day’s practice.
🙏🏽Do you have a favorite yoga pose? Savasana ☺️☺️ and Triangle! I love any pose that twists!
🌱Outside of yoga...what do you love to do?
Spend time outside (hike, beach, plants)! Spend time with my husband, Mark ❤️, connect with my adult children (4 in Tallahassee and 1 in GA), antique and cook! And I still have both of my parents nearby!
💌Fun fact:
I never leave home without being covered in Golden Retriever fur! Love you Bear! 🦮
