Insurance denials are common in eating disorders treatment. I am a member of the International Federation for Eating Disorders Dietitians and we have an opportunity to share stories of patients who have struggled with reimbursement or been denied care with the Department of Labor. We have an attorney compiling stories now. If you have a story you are willing to share, even without your personal details, please contact me directly. We need case examples that include:
The insurance company and the name of the insurance plan
The name of the employer and the state they’re located in
A description of the problem they’ve been having with insurance

There is absolutely more than one way to approach talking about weight (or food, or bodies)- as many as there are individual clients and patients. We have to be careful of our own dogma- have always advised this. Requested the paper to read, but the concept is a no-brainer.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious illness associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Few data exist to guide practice regarding sharing daily weight information (open weighing) or withho...

Many athletes don't want to work with a sports dietitian due to mental health stigma because we screen for eating disorders and take care of folks with eating disorders. Every sports medicine practice should do this! It doesn't mean we assume everyone who seeks care has an eating disorder. We are also here to educate you on sports science, encourage solid rest and recovery, and teach you how to optimize and implement individual strategies for fueling that next outstanding performance.

So not only is fat suboptimal for endurance performance, and likely for stop and go sports/dance that rely on the same fuel amounts over time, but low carbohydrate intake along with low energy availability result in the athlete triad = reduced s*x hormones, reduced bone health, risk for injuries and eating disorders, and ultimately- impaired performance.

Research says simply eating adequate calories isn't enough if you're not consuming enough carbohydrates

Thanksgiving is past and for those of you who celebrate Christmas, you will have another opportunity to practice setting boundaries around unwanted and inappropriate comments about your body, your food choices, how much you eat, and if you worked out or not before or after eating. It's no one's business and don't we have more important things to talk about? I do. And I want to hear what's going on in your life, how you've overcome loss, or what gives you joy, or what plans you have coming up. Try these responses: "I love you_____. I've been feeding myself for 15 years, I don't need any help, but thank you." "Hey do me a favor and please don't make comments about my body." "Uhm, you may not mean any harm, but your comments about my food choices are really hurtful." My favorite: "I'm sure you don't mean to be (rude, racist, s*xist, elitist, critical, etc,) when you say things like that." Here's to learning to be assertive in 2022. You've got this!
