New research is connecting the dots between muscle loss and memory decline—and the findings are eye-opening. A 2022 study in JAMA Network Open found that older adults with low muscle mass experienced a quicker drop in executive function—your brain’s “CEO skills” like planning, decision-making, and staying organized. Other studies echo the link: less muscle may mean more risk for dementia.

“The relationship between muscle loss and dementia is increasingly recognized as significant, though not yet fully understood,” says Ryan Glatt, CPT and senior brain health coach at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute.
