Did you know?
When mares come into heat, their hormone levels—especially estrogen and prostaglandins—shift dramatically. These hormonal changes can increase uterine tone and overall muscular sensitivity. This can lead to a sudden increase in muscle tension, particularly in the lumbar and hind-end areas. Increased prostaglandin activity can also heighten inflammation and make muscle fibers more prone to spasms or cramping, which is why some mares feel extra stiff or uncomfortable during a heavy cycle.
This mare is on day 6 of a pretty rough heat cycle, and today she felt especially tight through her glutes and hamstrings. So before our ride, I gave her a good spray-down with Genie In A Bottle to help increase circulation, ease tension, and support more comfortable movement.
After our ride, I sprayed Genie In A Bottle again and applied Middle Man on top to really draw out inflammation and help those muscle fibers release and relax.
Heat cycles can seem like a tricky setback when you are training or competing. Supporting mares through their hormonal ups and downs makes a huge difference in their comfort and performance.
