Hip Precautions After Hip Replacement Surgery: Essential Guidelines for Safe Recovery
If you've recently had hip replacement surgery (hip arthroplasty), congratulations on taking this important step toward a more active, pain-free life! To ensure your new hip heals properly and functions optimally, following hip precautions is critical during your recovery.
What are hip precautions?
Hip precautions are movement restrictions designed to protect your new hip joint during the healing phase. They help prevent dislocation and allow your muscles and tissues to heal properly around the implant.
The three main precautions to follow:
1. Avoid hip flexion beyond 90 degrees
Keep your hip bent at no more than a right angle. This means avoiding low chairs, bending to pick things up from the floor, or leaning forward too far.
2. Avoid hip adduction (crossing your legs)
Don't cross your legs or bring your knee toward your midline. Use a pillow between your legs when lying down to maintain proper alignment.
3. Avoid internal rotation
Don't turn your toes inward. Keep your foot and knee pointing slightly outward or straight ahead.
Why these matter:
Your new hip joint needs time to stabilize. Following these precautions reduces the risk of dislocation and allows the surrounding muscles to strengthen, which is essential for long-term success.
Daily tips for success:
Use elevated toilet seats and chairs, sleep with a pillow between your legs, avoid bending forward at the waist, and ask for help with activities you're unsure about.
