WHAT'S GOING AROUND?— Each week, we ask our ER physicians what ailments and conditions are commonly being seen in our Emergency Room.

THIS WEEK, Craig Keinath, an emergency physician assistant with McLaren, reports:

Influenza
More and more patients have been testing positive for influenza A, making it the most common reason patients are seeking care in the ED for symptoms of fever, cough, muscle aches, and vomiting.

RSV
Though not yet trending, there have been several patients who have tested positive for RSV, presenting with symptoms of fever and persistent cough.

Strep throat
There has been a growing trend of pediatric patients testing positive for strep throat after experiencing symptoms of a sudden sore throat and fever.

Slip and falls
Continuing icy and wintery conditions continue to send patients to the emergency and trauma center with orthopedic and soft tissue injuries.

Thank you and congratulations to McLaren Flint's December Outstanding Employee of the Month, Dana McChristion. Dana is the front office coordinator at the Outpatient Wound Care specialty clinic. Her colleagues admire her work ethic, terrific attitude, and especially her empathy for patients, often going above and beyond to help them.
"Dana goes out of her way to make sure patients are comfortable and feel taken care of," said her nominator. "One example- after recognizing the struggles a patient was having sitting in our waiting room chairs due to his height, she instructed him to call from his car upon arrival, so she could es**rt him to the exam room, allowing him to bypass the waiting room. This patient comes in every Friday, and she does this for every visit."

The Burton Fraternal Order of Eagles has generously donated $4,475 to the McLaren Flint Foundation to support our Cancer Patient Care Fund again this year. Each year the organization hosts a fundraiser to support patients and families impacted by cancer as part of their "people helping people" mission. The gift will help provide critical financial assistance for groceries, household and medical bills, gas, and other needs to Karmanos Cancer Institute patients who are struggling on their healing journey. If you see or know a member of the Burton Eagles, please thank them for the amazing work they do to lift up the people in our community.

A huge thank you goes out to a group of employees at global medical technology company Getinge, who decorated the Hospitality House for the holiday season. Getinge employees also volunteered and decorated for us last year. We truly appreciate them giving their time and doing such a beautiful job.

Early December each year marks two traditions for the hospital’s Auxiliary Volunteers.
They gather to celebrate each other’s hours of service and their annual donation to the McLaren Flint Foundation.
Members earn pins for their hours of service starting at 100. The sky’s the limit after that. This year’s top honors go to Ginny Fair, celebrating 22,000 service hours, and Kathy Carrithers with 17,500.
Auxiliary president Mary Forsythe presented a $12,000 check to Vice President of the McLaren Flint Foundation Doug Glazier. The funds come from sales in the Gift Shop and the vendor sales held year-round. This year’s donation was designated for equipment and furniture for the LDRP unit, as well as new recliners for the ICU and CCU.

McLaren Flint is honored to announce Lisa Cavett, CNM, is the Allied Health Provider of the Fourth Quarter. Lisa has been a certified nurse midwife since 2015, providing compassionate, high-quality care to our patients. Colleagues praise her commitment to McLaren and its midwifery program.
"Teammates and patients describe Lisa as kind, caring, and knowledgeable," said her nominator. "The ED and medical floors compliment her quick response and the excellent care she provides to OB/GYN patients outside of Labor and Delivery."

Congratulations Dr. Kavitha Kesari, McLaren Flint's Physician of the Fourth Quarter. Dr. Kesari joined the medical staff in 1999, and has been a dedicated clinician, teacher, and leader of the Internal Medicine department ever since. Colleagues admire her hard work and willingness to assist on process improvement initiatives.
"Dr. Kesari chairs several important hospital-based committees," said her nominator. "She is knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and approachable. McLaren is fortunate to have such a talented physician on staff. Her dedication and commitment to excellence are admirable."

McLaren Proton Therapy Center radiation oncologist Dr. Hani Al Halabi spoke with WNEM TV this week about when getting a second opinion may be in a patient's best interest.

McLaren Flint Chief Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellow Dr. Mohammed Siddiqui has been honored by the American College of Chest Physicians. At this year's 90th anniversary CHEST meeting, Dr. Siddiqui was honored with the Top Case Report Award. This is quite an accomplishment, as CHEST receives thousands of entries every year.

Many thanks to the McLaren Flint Family Medicine Residency team for a successful Thanksgiving food drive. Dr. Talal Nasir set up food collection boxes at the clinic to collect donations. Residents then distributed the food to the Genesee County Free Medical Clinic and several Flint food pantries operated by Well of Hope.
