Today we celebrate two Black women physicians, Dr. Ionia Rollin Whipper and Dr. Virginia Margaret Alexander, who led community-based public health efforts at the turn of the 20th Century.
Dr. Ionia Rollin Whipper traveled across the South during World War I to educate Black mothers and midwives about hygiene and safe childbirth. Dr. Virginia Margaret Alexander founded the Aspiranto Health Home to provide low-cost care to low-income Black families in Philadelphia.
Their legacy lives on in today’s efforts to improve Black maternal health and ensure each parent and baby has the chance to thrive.
