Full Circle: Jessica’s Story of Courage + Connection ✨**
This Giving Tuesday, we’re honored to share the story of someone who reflects the heart of Serenity House Communities — Jessica, the newest member of our SHC family, whose journey reminds us what recovery truly means: courage, connection, and a life rebuilt from the inside out.
Jessica’s recovery date — August 21, 2023 — isn’t just a milestone.
It’s the moment she chose herself.
From childhood trauma to losing her sense of worth, Jessica began struggling with substance-use disorder at just 12 years old. The years that followed led her into places she never wanted to be and a life she didn’t know how to escape.
“I lived a life of crime and prostitution. I thought my value was measured by a dollar bill,” she shares. “For the longest time, I believed I was a nobody — that all I would ever be was a call girl on the run.”
Between 2013 and 2024, Jessica was in and out of jails and prisons, never spending more than six months in the free world.
“My trauma and addiction took everything — my identity, my children, my freedom. I didn’t know who I was anymore.”
Eventually, she reached a breaking point.
Exhausted. Alone. Living from her car.
She made the bravest decision of her life — to turn herself in and begin the process of healing.
During 18 months of incarceration, Jessica committed to deep self-reflection. After her release, she entered New Paths, completed 92 days of treatment, and moved into recovery housing — rebuilding her life one piece at a time.
She leaned into transformation with everything she had:
WRAP • TREM • Mental Health Court • Job training at St. Luke’s New Life Center • Leadership roles in her recovery home.
And then — a connection that changed her life.
Jessica was introduced to Serenity House Communities through our Rides for Recovery program.
“I’m not from Flint. I had no idea where anything was. SHC made sure I could get to court, therapy, medical appointments — everything. They didn’t just give me rides. They gave me compassion. They made me feel heard and safe. Without them, I don’t think I would’ve succeeded.”
Today, in a full-circle moment, Jessica is now part of our team, working as a driver for Rides for Recovery — offering the same support that once helped save her life.
“I never thought my life today was possible. My kids are coming back into my life. People know me for who I am now. And I finally love the person I’m becoming.”
Jessica’s story is why Serenity House exists.
It’s why we open our doors every day.
