March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign established in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Throughout the month, everyone is encouraged to learn more about making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.

This year’s theme is ā€œDiscover the Power of Nutrition.ā€ šŸ’š

Nutrition has the power to help individuals and communities thrive. The foods and beverages we choose each day help fuel our bodies, support growth and development, and build lifelong healthy habits.

Today we’re sharing healthy lunch ideas for school kids to help power their day at school and keep them feeling their best. Small, balanced choices can make a big difference now and in the future!

Provider Spotlight: Allison Mihyar, MSN, CPNP-PC 🌟

Allison Mihyar, MSN, CPNP-PC, serves as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the Mt. Morris School-Based Health Center, where she is dedicated to providing compassionate, accessible care to students and families in the Mt. Morris School District and throughout Genesee County.

Allison earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Michigan State University before completing her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Pediatric Primary Care at the University of Michigan. During her graduate clinical training, she gained valuable experience in several primary care settings as well as specialty care clinics, including the Gastroenterology Clinic and Allergy Clinic at the University of Michigan Brighton Center for Specialty Care.

In her role at the Mt. Morris School-Based Health Center, Allison provides a wide range of healthcare services for students and community members. Her work includes primary care visits, sick visits, and acute care services such as concussion evaluations, wound care and first aid, sports and school injury treatment, and care for common conditions including asthma exacerbations, urinary tract infections, ear pain, abdominal discomfort, and more.

Allison has special clinical interests in community health, particularly addressing adverse childhood experiences and health disparities. She is also passionate about managing conditions such as eczema, allergies, and asthma, and enjoys promoting health education and prevention. One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is watching young children grow and develop—especially during the formative years between ages one and five.

For the past year and a half, Allison has been proud to serve patients through MCHC. She values the organization’s commitment to expanding access to care and addressing healthcare inequities within the community.

ā€œI am proud to work at MCHC where the entire organization is committed to overcoming health disparities, expanding access to healthcare, and service the Genesee County,ā€ Allison shares. ā€œMy favorite thing about MCHC is how the organization adapts and expands services to fit the community’s needs.ā€

Did you know play can be a form of therapy? 🧸

For children, play is a natural way to communicate, process emotions, and understand the world around them.

At Mott Children’s Health Center, play becomes a powerful tool to support a child’s emotional and developmental growth. Because sometimes the most important work children do… looks a lot like play. šŸ’™
