It's never easy to turn down a holiday treat. After all, special foods are the highlight of the holiday season for many of us. Fortunately, it's possible to follow your healthy eating plan and even enjoy a few favorite snacks by making a few changes to your eating habits.

White flour and sugar, two unhealthy carbohydrates, are often found in holiday treats. The same foods may also contain undesirable saturated and trans fats, including shortening, margarine, fatty meats, butter, coconut oil, and whole-fat dairy products. Fried and processed foods, in particular, may contain too many carbohydrates and saturated and trans fats.

Keeping these guidelines in mind will help you avoid holiday eating pitfalls.

- Eat a healthy snack, like low-fat string cheese or peanut butter on celery or apple slices, before you leave for a holiday gathering. When you're hungry, it's much harder to resist sugary, fatty, or fried foods.

- Take a careful look at the selection and load most of your plate with fruits and vegetables. Leave room for a small taste of fatty or high-carb foods like white bread, cake, cookies, or fried foods.

- Many holiday recipes can be modified to reduce sugar or -include healthier carbohydrates and lower-fat products without affecting taste.

- Adding sugar substitutes makes holiday treats tasty without substantially increasing carbohydrates.

- Baking and roasting are better options than frying. If you do decide to fry, use healthy oils, like canola and olive, sparingly.

- Occasional treats are perfectly fine, even if you're committed to healthy eating. There's no reason you can't have a piece of cake on your birthday or enjoy your family's favorite holiday cookies.

- Stick to water during the gathering, or look for diet or zero-sugar soft drinks and juices.

Moving is good for every part of your body, from your legs to your heart and lungs. Any type of movement, whether it's completing a vigorous workout or walking your dog, improves blood circulation. Blood circulates oxygen throughout your body and provides important nutrients to muscles, tissues, and organs. Good circulation keeps your organs functioning optimally, speeds wound healing, and is essential for brain and heart health. Are your feet or hands always cold during the winter months? Even a brief exercise session will warm up those chilly fingers and toes.

Is lack of motivation the reason you rarely exercise during the winter? Exercise doesn't have to be a grueling chore. Any type of movement, whether it's dancing in your kitchen, bowling, cleaning your closet, or trying a few yoga moves, will help you stay healthier.

It's much more difficult to skip your daily walk or workout session when you exercise with someone else. After all, you won't want to disappoint your workout partner. Thanks to Zoom and other video calling software, you can work out together even if you live in different parts of the country.

If pain or stiffness makes staying active difficult, our chiropractor can help. Chiropractic treatments ease pain, keep your spine properly aligned, and loosen tight muscles and joints, making it much easier to exercise. Our chiropractor can also show you exercises that will help keep your muscles and joints loose, limber, and pain-free.

Could a visit help you move more comfortably? Give us a call to schedule your appointment.

Absolutely!

An MRI study (PMR 2014) showed that office workers have decreased disc height at the end of their work day, but a 20-second movement routine performed every 15 minutes has proven to prevent this.

The routine is: standing up, bending forward, backward, and side to side for 5 seconds each.

Your discs may not be bad; it could be your movement! This study shows how much your body requires movement. Movement can resolve 97% of disc herniations and even prevent many disc issues in the future.
