Why I Care So Much About Magnesium
When I was very young, I had what we now know was Restless Leg Syndrome. At the time, it was brushed off as “growing pains.” I didn’t have the words to explain it — I just knew it was miserable. My legs felt like they had to move constantly, and it was exhausting for both me and my mom.
Eventually, I grew out of it.
Then at 17, I was in a severe car accident. What followed were years in boots, braces, casts, multiple ankle surgeries, and a knee surgery. And almost immediately after the wreck… the restless legs came back.
It was brutal.
My leg felt like it needed to move constantly — but it also had to stay perfectly still because of pain and healing.
Thankfully, I was eventually prescribed medication that helped. (Which was a blessing, because I don’t tolerate many medications well.) But over time, like many medications, it hasn’t worked quite as effectively — and increasing it creates other issues.
One late night, searching for options, I came across a topical magnesium lotion. I ordered it without much expectation.
It helped.
That moment sent me down a research rabbit hole.
Magnesium plays a critical role in:
• Muscle contraction and relaxation
• Nerve transmission
• Regulation of the nervous system
• Inflammatory response
Research has shown that magnesium deficiency is associated with neuromuscular excitability and muscle cramps (Volpe, 2015, Nutrients).
Magnesium also plays a role in nervous system regulation and may influence sleep quality and muscle tension (Abbasi et al., 2012, Journal of Research in Medical Sciences).
There is also evidence linking magnesium status to inflammatory processes (Nielsen, 2018, Nutrients).
While research on topical magnesium is still emerging and mixed, many clinicians use it as part of broader strategies for muscle discomfort and nervous system support.
Fast forward — I’ve since been diagnosed with an inflammatory autoimmune condition myself.
Magnesium is now part of my daily routine. Not as a miracle cure. Not as hype. But as a tool.
And that’s why I talk about it. That’s why I use it in my practice.
Because I don’t recommend things casually.
I recommend what I’ve researched.
What I’ve tested.
What has supported my nervous system and muscle recovery firsthand.
If you struggle with muscle tension, restless legs, inflammation, or nervous system overload — magnesium might be something to explore with your healthcare provider.
