Recently, I was teaching my 4-year-old son (whose Christmas wishlist has gotten a little out of hand) that "thankfulness is linked to happiness, and happiness is linked to giving." I told him that even if he had all the toys in the world, he still wouldn't be happy if he wasn't thankful.

His response?
"I'm not thankful for any of my old toys!"
And I knew my work as his mom was cut out for me!

Later that day, as frustrations piled up and complaints filled my mind, I realized I needed to listen to my own words. Scripture aligns with science here. Philippians 4:6-7 speaks to praying with thanksgiving, and the peace of God will guard our hearts. Acts 20:35 tells us, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Psychologists have found that both gratitude and generosity stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine in our brains, which boosts our mood and reduces stress.

So the lesson for the 4-year-old applies to the 31-year-old too: if you're feeling sad or mad, pause and thank God for something—or give a gift to someone else!

Thanksgiving and Christmas are wonderful reminders of this truth. Only God can bring us to a state of being so joyful that it overflows to gratitude and cheerful giving.

*The Shoals Sav-A-Life staff is constantly blown away by this joy and generosity from our volunteers and donors.*

Thank YOU! We hope you have a joyful Thanksgiving!!

About once a month, our day is brightened by the kindness of Mr. John Crandall! Since 2020, he has faithfully dropped off a box of gloves for our center. These gloves are used every week for pregnancy tests, STI testing, and ultrasounds. This small act has been an essential supply that keeps our services running smoothly and has saved us valuable time and hundreds of dollars over the years! Mr. Crandall first heard about Shoals Sav-A-Life through his church family at Cliff Haven Church.

What a wonderful picture of God using a small "yes" to unite us and make a big impact! No "yes" is too small in God's kingdom! Which reminds us of Proverbs 16:3, "Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed."

Hope Memorial Update🌳

Huge thanks to Porter Garden Center in Muscle Shoals for donating a new crepe myrtle to replace the one that died!

Mr. John Sworm was the first to notice the dead tree and notified us at Shoals Sav-A-Life. Our very own Brandi Webster and her husband, John—who both share a love for gardening—requested the tree from Porter's, who graciously donated this one, and Mr. Webster got it planted this week!

This isn't just a quick update about a tree, but a reminder that life is better and more beautiful when we come together, each using our God-given talents for a common goal. Let us remember that we need each other and not to be too busy to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in our lives. May we come together as one, just as Jesus prayed for the unity of His believers (John 17:20-23) 🫶

🩵October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month🩷
Which makes it especially meaningful that this month, several of us at Shoals Sav-A-Life had the privilege of meeting Mr. John Sworm. At 92 years old and still actively serving the community, he came by to help replace a crepe myrtle tree at the Hope Memorial.

The Hope Memorial (photos below from Mr. Sworm) was originally donated to SSAL by Center Star First Baptist Church. With John’s help and the support of others, it now stands in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens on Florence Boulevard as a place for healing and remembrance.

The life-sized bronze statue depicts Jesus holding a child with a woman sitting beside Him:
👼The child represents any little one who has passed away, whether from miscarriage, stillbirth, illness, accidental death, or other causes. Or a child who has been chosen through adoption.
👩‍🦰The woman represents any mother who has experienced the loss of a child before or after birth, felt regret after a terminated pregnancy, or given the gift of life through adoption, and finds hope in Jesus taking care of them all.

This site welcomes anyone seeking a place of comfort, hope, or quiet reflection. Memorial stones are available for purchase, but are never required to visit.

John Sworm told us how proud he is of this beautiful spot. Seeing the name “Kelly Sworm” etched among the stones shines a new light on his heart and purpose behind it. Kelly was his beloved daughter who passed away at just 6 months old.

We are so grateful to Mr. Sworm for his many years of service and support to SSAL, and to everyone who has helped make the Hope Memorial a special place. We invite you to visit and experience this peaceful space for yourself!

We had a very special visitor this week at the clinic — Gerald (Gerry) Wallace, one of Shoals Sav-A-Life’s founders and our very first Executive Director!

Gerry was in town to plant a maple tree in memory of his beloved wife, Ruth, who passed away this July. With tears in his eyes, he reflected on their time leading the ministry:
"I may have been the face of Shoals Sav-A-Life, speaking at churches and events, but Ruth was the engine that kept it all running."

Together, they witnessed over 400 salvations. Ruth counseled more than 30 post-abortive women one-on-one, sharing the grace, hope, and healing of Jesus. Even an OB-GYN once sought her out for counseling — a testament to her compassion and wisdom.

It was a full-circle moment when I told my babysitter about Gerry’s visit. She lit up: “Aw! I worked under Gerry and Ruth! I loved them. They were amazing people.”

Before Gerry left, one of our newest team members read Isaiah 61:1–3 over him:
"They may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified."

What they planted long ago? It’s still growing. Still reaching. Still loving moms and babies today.

Thank you, Gerry and Ruth. And thank you, Jesus, for continuing the work! 🌳❤️
