Christmas is recognized as the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus, host family gatherings, decorate big or small, and give gifts. To me, Christmas represents something a bit deeper. I view Christmas as a time of year to reflect that the God of our creation came to earth in human form. His purpose (and therefore the purpose of Christmas) was to start the journey of reversing the curse that took place in the Garden of Eden. Jesus being born into a nuclear family and experiencing the same trials, emotions and disappointments that I, breaks my heart. But He did it willingly and joyfully. I like to view Christmas as a way to honor Him for His willingness to leave the Father in the perfection of Heaven to come to earth and endure all that human life offers (both good and bad). He understands what we go through and He offers grace. We should do the same for others. He felt the emotions we feel, yet He was able to harness them and not bleed out on the ones that didn't cut Him. We should do the same.
Let us attempt to reflect deeper on the true meaning of Christmas. It's more than a baby in a manger scene (although that is a beautiful part). It's more than the hustle and bustle of gathering all your gift cards to exchange for other gift cards (insert sarcasm). It's more than a house lit up with lights that has the awesome effects of coordinating music (such amazing talent out there). It's about pondering the question; do I represent Jesus well? Do I love better because He came to earth to show me how? Do I offer grace when I don't deserve it, but yet He came to give it freely? That is the true gifts of Christmas. That is the true meaning for me. I want to become better each day, showing more of Him to all of you.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
With love,
Melissa
