Methylene Blue and Urine Color
Methylene blue is a dye that can cause urine to turn blue or green. This is a common and harmless side effect of taking methylene blue as a medication or using it in diagnostic procedures.
How It Works
Methylene blue is metabolized in the body and excreted in the urine. As it passes through the kidneys, it binds to urochrome, a pigment that gives urine its yellow color. This binding reaction changes the color of the urine to blue or green.
When to Expect Blue or Green Urine
You may notice blue or green urine after taking methylene blue orally, intravenously, or rectally. The color typically appears within a few hours of taking the medication and can last for up to 24 hours.
