Cheshire Home residents gathered to advocate directly with local state officials about discrepancies in Medicaid coverage within long-term care facilities. These were not policy discussions, only real stories about access to equipment, therapy, independence, and dignity.
Our residents spoke from experiences, reminding decision-makers that policies impact real people every day. Advocacy is rehabilitation. Inclusion is not optional. Systems improve when the voices of those affected are at the center of the discussion.
Cheshire Home residents attended the roundtable asking for self-determination and meaningful representation with the motto “Nothing about us without us,” made popular by James Charlton. A prominent American disability rights activist, author, and leader in the Independent Living movement, Mr. Charlton fought so that no policy, program, or decision should be made about people with disabilities without their full and direct participation.
We are proud of our residents for leading the conversation and pushing for a more equitable future.
