You may see graphics featuring teal ribbons this month – that’s because September is recognized as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. While the disease is rare and primarily affects women older than 60, it is the fifth leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. Because ovarian cancer often has no obvious symptoms, it can be difficult to diagnose. Blood tests and pelvic imaging are the most effective ways to detect this cancer at an early stage.

Some possible indicators to be aware of include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating and urinary frequency that persists for *more than two weeks* and does not respond to normal treatments.

If you have questions or would like to discuss your family history or risk factors for ovarian cancer with a physician, please reach out to our office. We are here for you.

Hot flashes, moodiness? Here’s what to really expect as approaches.

You’ve hit menopause after you go 12 months without a period.
On average, menopause occurs around age 51.

Menopause before 40 is considered early menopause.
The years leading up to your last period are called peri-menopause.

*Symptoms include hot flashes and weight gain.
*Menopause leads to bone loss.
*Risk for heart disease rises after menopause.
*Hormone therapy can help with menopause symptoms.
*Lifestyle boosts can help you feel better.
*No more periods can be freeing.

Do allergy shots really work?

Millions of Americans suffer from various types of allergies. Sometimes symptoms are so severe that they become debilitating, interfere with your quality of life, or can even increase your risk of dying from an anaphylactic reaction.
