Fear can feel enormous—like a mountain standing between who we are and who we want to be. But as Matice Morris reminded us at the 2023 Annual Conference, the climb is worth it.

For so many people who stutter, courage starts with a shaky breath and a single step forward.

We want to respond to conversations online about a scene in Netflix’s new holiday film, “My Secret Santa.”

In the scene, a young girl tells Santa she wishes she could stop stuttering, and he suggests singing. While well-intentioned, this reinforces an outdated assumption that stuttering needs to be “fixed.”

We recognize that some children and adults who stutter may genuinely wish their stutter would go away, and that feeling is valid. We’re committed to helping people embrace who they are, however they stutter, and to creating environments where ALL forms of communication are accepted and respected.

We call on Netflix to connect with us as a trusted resource. The NSA is here to provide guidance and access to individuals and experts who can help ensure portrayals of stuttering are authentic, accurate, and empowering.

We invite our community to join the conversation here. What are your thoughts?
