This research study compared the effects of relaxation to music and yoga nidra on the mental health of frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. The open-label randomized trial involved a Relaxation-to-Music Group listening to deep relaxation music while Yoga Nidra Group participants practiced yoga nidra. Both interventions were delivered via YouTube and were to be performed daily for 30 minutes during healthcare workers' 2-week duty periods.

All 30 people who participated in a study (conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign), scored better in cognitive tasking tests (increased working memory and mental acuity) immediately after a yoga session than they did after an aerobic session. They also reported feeling calmer, more centered, and relaxed, after the yoga session whereas they only felt a little tired after the aerobic session.

Almost 18 years ago when I first started practicing yoga, I could truly feel the positive effects the practice had on my mental health. Stress, anxiety and depression can be detrimental to brain function in all ages. This study is one of the best I've seen to date to back up with science what I have believed for many many years.
