Did you know that roughly one-third of adults don’t get enough sleep?
How much sleep SHOULD each member of your family be getting?
Here are the numbers according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM):
Newborns 4-12 months: 12 to 16 hours per day
Children 1-2 Years: 11 to 14 hours per day
Children 3-5 Years: 10 to 13 hours per day
Children 6-12 Years: 9 to 12 hours per day
Teens 13-18 Years: 8 to 10 hours per day
Adults 18 years or older: 7 to 8 hours per day
Sleep plays a critical role in supporting your immune system. While you sleep, your body produces infection-fighting cells and proteins, including cytokines, which help regulate immune responses and combat illness.
Consistent, quality sleep also allows your body to repair tissues, reduce inflammation, and strengthen its ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. In contrast, lack of sleep can weaken immune defenses, making you more susceptible to getting sick — and slowing recovery if you do.
