I have had this conversation with many patients and families over the years to help them better understand why I almost never recommend crushing medications

When someone with dementia has difficulty taking their pills, you may hear the recommendation to crush the pill and put it in a food or drink. But please know that not all pills can be crushed!

Crushing some medications can alter the effectiveness and safety. Even if a pill can be crushed, not all liquids or substances are suitable for mixing with them. Please talk to a doctor or pharmacist before altering the medication in any way.
