Hey everyone! I really appreciate the follows. It has taken me sometime to clarify my vision for my nursing practice, but things have finally come together!
This whole journey started after spending a lot of time taking care of people who were suffering. They were in their lowest moments- in the hospital or at cardiac rehab due to chronic disease. It gnawed at me that many people didn't have to end up in the hospital with such serious illnesses. I couldn't help but think, "Where was the support for people in the realm of disease prevention?" The more I looked into it, the same answers and dead ends would arise. "There is no money in it." In a majority of the cases, insurance companies won't pay for preventative services. I learned that, when preventative services were offered in hospital, many of these were not reimbursed. The hospital ate the cost!
Becoming certified in Holistic Nursing taught me some things about the body. We are incredibly resilient! The body wants to stay alive and has the ability to heal when we give it what it needs. I looked at herbalism as a way to help, but wasn't interested in the idea of herbs to replace medications. They can't do that (for the most part) and really should be used to aid in the body's ability to self-heal.
After receiving training in Functional Nursing, I realized this was the missing piece in healthcare and what I had been looking for. Using functional nursing, I started helping clients identify possible root causes to symptoms they were having. I wasn't interested in diagnosing. I wanted to see fewer diagnoses. I was interested in promoting health and partnering with people while they discover their path forward to feeling better.
My wife has been with me on this journey, and, in a very real way, has benefited. She ended up having gut issues so bad, they were affecting her quality of life. She couldn't go out due to gut pain. Some days she couldn't make it from her work to her car without being doubled over in pain. She saw all the specialists and got no answers. She sought a referral to an allergist for food allergy testing and was told, "There are other people out there that actually need an allergist," and "it would be a waste of the allergist's time." Everything came to a head when she developed chest pain at work and was admitted to the ER. It was determined that the chest pain was not cardiac in nature, but more likely due to stress.
We decided she needed to try an elimination diet. Within 3 weeks, she was feeling much less inflamed. Methodically we started reintroducing certain foods back into her diet and identifying the ones she still couldn't tolerate. She lost weight in the process and felt better. She had no more pain. After seeing this, I sought training in functional nursing through INCA.
This year, we ended up looking over her labs because, while the gut pain and weight weren't so much an issue anymore, she was still struggling with low energy, anxiety, and the chest pain was coming back. We identified the possible cause and she decided she wanted to supplement. That was 3 weeks ago, and today she is like a different person! She has more energy than me now!
I am excited to offer this service to clients and I would love to hear your health story! I am not a doctor, I don't diagnose, and I don't treat. What I do is educate, listen with an caring and informed ear, and help you make sense of what your body is trying to tell you. What causes one person's headache may be different from what causes someone else's.
If this approach resonates with you, please reach out. I offer a free discovery session and will help for free if I can. If you are interested in diving deeper and investing in yourself, my prices are available on my website NurseBenHN.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
