Goliath here shows off all the physical signs leading up to a big release. Lips twitching, ears and eyes relaxed, all right before a big yawn releasing the tension in his neck where I was working. 🩷🥱

🐎 5 Signs Your Horse May Have Back Pain

Back pain in horses isn’t always obvious, but it often shows up in ways we might mistake for training or attitude issues.

Here are 5 common signs to watch for:

• Resistance under saddle, refusing to move forward, bucking, or hollowing out
• Difficulty picking up or holding a lead
• Shortened stride or stiffness, especially through the topline
• Sensitivity to grooming or saddling (flinching, ear pinning, moving away)
• Trouble bending or staying soft in one direction

Your horse can’t tell you they’re uncomfortable,
but their body will.

Muscle tension, compensation patterns, and soreness through the back can all impact performance, behavior, and overall well-being.

Equine massage helps release tension, improve mobility, and support a more comfortable, willing horse.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it might be worth taking a closer look at their back.

The brachiocephalicus muscle is one of those big, important muscles in your horse that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Running from the head and neck down to the shoulder, the brachiocephalicus, or the under neck, plays a major role in forward movement, helping your horse reach, extend, and stabilize through the stride.

Every time your horse moves out, especially at faster gaits, this muscle is working hard.
Because of that, it’s also one of the most commonly overworked and tight muscles we see.

Tightness here can show up as: • Shortened or choppy stride
• Difficulty bending or flexing at the poll
• Resistance in the bridle
• Unevenness through the shoulders

Horses that are ridden frequently in contact, travel hollow, or don’t get enough correct stretching work are especially prone to brachiocephalicus tension.

The good news? With proper bodywork, stretching, and correct movement, this muscle can soften and function the way it’s meant to.
Incorporating things like:
✔️ Long, low stretching work
✔️ Correct lateral exercises
✔️ Regular massage/bodywork
✔️ Proper saddle fit
…can make a huge difference in your horse’s comfort and performance.

A relaxed brachiocephalicus = freer movement, better reach, and a happier horse.

The trapezius muscle is one of those areas in the horse that often gets overlooked, but it plays a huge role in comfort and movement.

This muscle sits along the top of the shoulder and withers, and it’s responsible for helping lift and stabilize the shoulder. When it’s tight, sore, or underdeveloped, you may start to notice things like short, choppy strides, resistance in transitions, or even sensitivity when saddling.

Once that tension sets in, it can restrict movement and create compensation patterns throughout the rest of the body.

Through targeted bodywork, we can help: • Release built-up tension

• Improve circulation to support muscle health

• Encourage proper movement and shoulder freedom

• Support rebuilding of healthy muscle tone

Many horses will show clear signs of release in this area, licking, chewing, stretching, or even lowering their head as the tension melts away.

Keeping the trapezius relaxed and functioning properly not only improves performance, but also helps your horse stay more comfortable in their work day-to-day.

A happy, relaxed shoulder leads to a freer-moving horse. 🩷🐴

When it comes to saddle pads, the material you choose matters more than most people realize, and wool fleece is one of the best options for your horse’s back 🐎

Wool fleece naturally conforms to your horse’s shape, creating even contact under the saddle. This helps distribute pressure more evenly and reduces the risk of sore spots or pressure points.

The fleece must however, make direct contact with the horses back to get the full benefit of the wool. A wool half pad on top of a regular square pad negates most of the effects of the fleece

Here’s why wool fleece stands out:
• Superior shock absorption- Cushions movement and reduces impact on the back
• Excellent breathabilit- Allows heat to escape, helping prevent overheating
• Natural moisture-wicking- Pulls sweat away from the skin to reduce irritation
• Even pressure distribution- Supports better saddle fit and muscle comfort
• Temperature regulating-Keeps horses cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter
• Soft yet supportive – Moves with your horse while still providing structure

From a bodywork perspective, I often notice less back tension and soreness in horses that are consistently ridden in well-fitted wool fleece pads. When the back can move freely without restriction or excess pressure, muscles can function properly and stay healthier over time.

Not all pads are created equal, and sometimes choosing a natural fiber like wool fleece can make a noticeable difference in your horse’s comfort, performance, and long-term soundness.

After a good massage session, one of the best things you can do for your horse is give them turnout time 🐴🌿

Massage works by releasing tension, improving circulation, and helping the muscles relax, but movement is what really helps “lock in” those benefits. When your horse is turned out after a session, they’re able to move freely, stretch, roll, and self-adjust. This natural movement helps flush out toxins released during the massage and encourages better overall muscle function.

Turnout also gives your horse a chance to mentally decompress after bodywork. Instead of going straight back into a stall, they can process the release physically and mentally in a low-stress environment.

Think of it like this, massage opens the door, but movement helps your horse walk through it.
If you want to get the most out of your horse’s session, don’t skip the turnout. Their body will thank you for it! 🩷

Young horses are learning, growing, and working, all at the same time 🐴

That’s a lot for a developing body.

As they build muscle and figure out balance under saddle, it’s easy for tension and compensation patterns to sneak in. What starts as a small tight spot can turn into uneven movement, resistance, or soreness down the line.

Equine massage can help: • Support healthy muscle development

• Improve flexibility and coordination

• Reduce soreness from new training demands

• Encourage better balance and body awareness

It’s not just about fixing problems, it’s about setting them up right from the start.

A comfortable young horse learns better, moves better, and stays happier in their work. 🩷

Ever notice your horse yawning during or after bodywork?

It’s not because they're tired, it’s actually one of the clearest signs of a release.

Yawning in horses is commonly linked to the release of tension in the jaw, poll, and along the topline. These areas are deeply connected to the nervous system, so when your horse feels safe enough to let go of stored stress or discomfort, you'll often see it come out as a big yawn (or several!).

During equine massage, these yawn releases can mean: • Physical tension is letting go
• The nervous system is shifting into a more relaxed state
• Your horse is processing and releasing stress
• There’s improved comfort and mobility happening

Sometimes yawning is paired with other signs like licking, chewing, soft eyes, or a lowered head, all indicators your horse is settling and feeling better in their body.

Every horse expresses release differently, but yawning is one of those moments where you can literally see the reset happening.
It’s a small action with a big meaning 🩷
