Food barriers post #2...
We all have a reason to not cook for ourselves. I've heard a variety of reasons, but I'd say the top few reasons I hear from patients is that they don't have the time/energy to cook for themselves and their families everyday, they lack the creativity of coming up with recipes, eating healthy doesn't taste good/is difficult/is expensive, and a lot simply don't enjoy cooking.
These are some of the reasons I've started meal prepping with a girlfriend of mine. We spend about four hours every Sunday cooking two meals pre-portioned out (HUGE HELP) for 3-4 days/week. We also prep fresh fruit and vegetables, crackers, whole wheat muffins, egg bites, single serving desserts, and other snacks we've chosen for the week. This takes all the guess-work out for the week, AND we don't have to lift a single finger throughout the week (besides re-heating). We've done what I preach to my patients all the time: we've set ourselves up for success! We don't skip breakfast to "save calories." We don't leave it to the last minute and need to stop through a drive-thru after work. We consistently nourish and feed ourselves with food we know is good for us that we truly love.
Tying my rant to this picture, CrockPot has the cutest mini re-heating pot that I LOVE for reheating food at work. I know a lot of my patients don't use microwaves so this is a great option for you!
