Boredom isn’t something to fix — it’s something to grow through 🌿

At TimberNook Lake Winnebago Region, we leave space for those long stretches of “nothing to do”… because that’s often where the best play begins.

At first, it might sound like:
“I’m bored.”
“I don’t know what to do.”

But give it time…
And suddenly it becomes:
“I have an idea.”
“Watch this!”

✨ Independent play is a muscle
✨ It gets stronger with time, space, and trust
✨ It grows when adults step back just enough

When children aren’t handed the next activity, they learn to create their own. They experiment, problem-solve, imagine, and build confidence in their ideas.

That “bored” moment?
It’s actually the beginning of something really important.

💚 So we protect it. We make room for it. We trust it.
Because childhood doesn’t need to be constantly filled… it needs space to unfold 🌲

👉🏼 Spring and summer programs are open for registration, and spots are filling up! We have programs for ages 1-13…check them out on our website and secure your spot.

From “What should I do?” to “I’ve got an idea!” 🌿

It’s one of our favorite transformations to witness.

At first, a child might look around the woods waiting for instructions.
Waiting for direction.
Waiting for someone to tell them what comes next.

But in child-led, open-ended play, there is no script.
And something beautiful happens.

They pause.
They think.
They imagine.
And then—

💡 “I know!”

When children aren’t handed the plan, they create one.
When there isn’t a “right way,” they invent their own.
When adults step back, independence steps forward.

Open-ended outdoor play at TimberNook builds:
• Decision-making skills
• Confidence in their own ideas
• Problem-solving abilities
• Leadership
• Internal motivation (not just following directions)

The woods don’t tell them what to do - and neither do we.
So they learn to tell themselves.

And that’s where real independence begins. 🌲✨

🏅 With the Winter Olympics going on right now, we couldn’t wait to bring the spirit of the games to the woods next week.

At Winter Olympics, our TimberNook drop off program for children ages 7–12, the kids will have the opportunity to create and play in their very own winter games—designed by them, inspired by nature. Using loose parts we provide and natural materials they discover in the woods, kids will imagine, build, test, and refine creative challenges that invite big movement, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Think snow-built courses, balance challenges between trees, invented competitions, and lots of laughter as ideas come to life. There are no medals here—just creativity, collaboration, resilience, and the joy of child-led play outdoors.

As athletes around the world compete in the Winter Olympics, your child can experience the excitement also—in a way that’s meaningful, hands-on, and unforgettable.

Happening next week — spots are limited. Sign your child up for Winter Olympics and let them create, move, and play in the best arena of all: the woods.
