"CPT" is an outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy practice. Suzanne and Stephen Atcavage, both physical therapists, opened their first office at the Forest City location in 1997. Since 1997, the practice has expanded to five locations - Forest City, Hawley, Carbondale, Dunmore, and Honesdale. The practice is inspired by the goal to provide patient-focused care and the use of evidence-based medicine to ensure the provision of effective, customized care, specific to each client's need. At CPT, the patient is NOT a number. Lymphedema care, sports medicine, Board Certified Hand Therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, concussion management, Parkinson's Disease programs and pelvic floor rehabilitation are among the specialty care services offered. 👀Lymphedema occurs as a result of a “plumbing” issue in the body. The vessels of the lymphatic system become damaged or malformed, and therefore, are unable to transport lymph fluid, which results in back up of fluid in the tissues of the body. When fluid congests in the tissue, swelling occurs. 🫀 Lymphatic fluid congestion decreases healthy blood flow to the tissue, interferes with wound healing, and enables bacteria to grow, which increases the risk of infection.

👉Please be mindful to not confuse lymphedema with other types of edema resulting from cardiac conditions, kidney failure, or other inflammatory conditions. These swelling conditions are systemic, while lymphedema occurs only in specific regions of the body.

The weeks following joint replacement surgery include a physical & occupational therapy program to work on safe techniques for moving around your home without compromising a healing joint. ⚠️It’s important to note that your surgeon may order home health therapy shortly after surgery.

As your movement improves, more complex activities will focus on how to improve your range of motion & strength. 🦵🦶 There will be an emphasis on increasing endurance for longer tasks & practicing work-related activities, if applicable.

✨💪The most advanced stage of therapy will work on returning to higher-level activities by addressing any remaining functional limitations. These higher-level stages will most likely be completed in an outpatient setting.

What does two weeks post total knee replacement look like? 👇

Typical early physical therapy sessions focus on regaining range of motion for bending & straightening, activating the quadriceps & other muscles around the thigh & knee, & improving mobility. 🦵Mobility training includes walking with a walker or cane, as well as safely getting in & out of a chair, bed, & shower. 👀We also monitor the incision for proper healing & help manage excessive swelling as needed.

📣Shout out to our Billing Manager, Stephanie Chowanec, for her work in the community! Steph, who has been with CPT for 20 years and manages our billing department, is a volunteer firefighter and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) with the Dickson City Fire Department. 🚑 Steph achieved this credential in January after completing several months of coursework, "ride along" hours, and successful completion of the State Psychomotor (skills) exam and the National Registry exam.

✨🔥Steph works as an NREMT with the Chinchilla Fire Company and Covington Fire Department as well. Steph previously worked in this field and always felt the urge to get back into this work. She feels "it is very rewarding giving back to the community and being able to help others."
